Descripción del empleo

Organizational context: The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN agency focused on promoting humane and orderly migration. The Migration Health Division (MHD) globally oversees and supports IOM's health services, aiming for comprehensive, rights-based programs for migrants and communities. Within MHD, the Migration Health Informatics (MHI) unit leads digital transformation and analytics, establishing an AI team to integrate AI tools into health assessment programs and IT systems.

Job purpose: This role supports the Migration Health Informatics (MHI) unit in its digital transformation efforts, specifically focusing on the integration and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the Health Assessment Programme (HAP). The specialist will contribute to the effective, safe, and ethical application of AI in medical workflows, enhancing data management, analytics, and quality assurance globally. The position aims to support applied AI projects, fostering innovation and operational efficiency in areas such as sentiment analysis, health chatbots, clinical coding aids, diagnostic recommendations, and computer-aided diagnosis, ultimately contributing to improved public health and migrant well-being.

Responsibilities: Support the implementation and validation of AI tools, including computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) for medical imaging and health chatbots, ensuring correct integration into pre-migration health activities and workflows. Provide technical assistance for testing and validating AI models, assisting in the review of AI Large Language Models (LLMs) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools. Develop and maintain responsible AI governance artefacts, such as validation protocols, model cards, risk assessments, and monitoring plans, ensuring safe use of AI outputs as decision-support tools with clear limitations and human oversight. Assist in the technical and functional assessment of AI solutions, support the integration of AI services into IT workflows, and contribute to analytics and visualization materials for performance monitoring. Participate in training activities for staff on AI/LLM use and help build local capacity, while collaborating with various IOM teams and external partners.

Education: A Master's degree in a relevant field (Medicine, Radiography, Health Informatics, Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering) with five years of experience, or a University degree with seven years of experience. Required certification, coursework, or demonstrable applied experience in AI/ML, medical imaging informatics, NLP/LLM applications, health data analytics, or responsible AI for health.

Work experience: Proven experience with LLM/NLP, computer vision, or time-series analysis. Demonstrated experience in managing and processing large, complex databases. Experience or practical knowledge of MLOps/LLMOps practices is beneficial. Experience with sensitive health data, electronic medical records, clinical workflows, medical imaging data, health data standards, or health information systems is desirable.

Skills: Proficiency in programming languages such as SQL, Python, or R. Expertise in data science and ML frameworks. Knowledge of health data standards (HL7/FHIR, ICD, SNOMED CT, LOINC, DICOM) and PACS/RIS workflows is advantageous. Familiarity with global health and migration is desirable. Experience with open-source or commercial AI technology stacks (e.g., BioGPT, ClinicalBERT, Azure Health AI Actions) is a plus.
