Universitat de les Illes Balears invites applications for a pre-doctoral contract in applied mathematics. The position supports doctoral studies and focuses on mathematical and optimisation models applied to deep learning for image and video processing.

Applicants must be admitted or pre-admitted to the ICT PhD program; teaching duties in Catalan and/or Spanish are expected. The contract runs until 04 October 2030, with a starting date of 5 October 2026.

A pre-doctoral contract in applied mathematics.

• Master's Degree in Mathematics by the contract start date.
• Pre-admission or admission to the PhD in Information and Communications Technology programme at the UIB.

Specific Requirements

A copy of candidates’ enrolment or admission document to the official PhD in Information and Communications Technology programme for the 2026-27 academic year; otherwise, supporting documentation stating that they will be admitted by the contract start date.

Language requirements

An ability to collaborate in teaching duties in Catalan and/or Spanish.

Eligibility criteria

Topic: Mathematical and Optimisation Models Applied to Deep Learning for Image and Video Processing.

Block A. Academic and/or scientific and technical training (max. 50 points).

Particular consideration will be given to candidates’ academic records and other curricular merits, as well as their relevance for the specific duties based on training and professional experience. Consideration will be given to participation in university lecturing, as well as the relevance and impact of research stays at national and international centres.

• Academic record (max. 35 points)
• Weighted average mark for undergraduate degree programmes to two decimal places (max. 20 points)
• Weighted average mark for the master’s programme to two decimal places required in the call (max. 15 points)
• Teaching activity (max. 6 points)
• Research activity (max. 6 points)
• Other merits (max. 3 points)

Block B. Candidates’ suitability for the research activities (max. 50 points).

Candidates will be assessed on their suitability for the research programme, project or activities, based on their training and previous experience.

Scale:

• Very good: 45 points
• Very poor: 0 points

Candidates who hold the qualification corresponding to the required category in the job offer with a non-EU degree, if selected, must present a certificate of equivalence of their non-EU qualification to a European qualification, or proof of having applied for this equivalence, in order to proceed with their hiring. The equivalence can be requested from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain.

Selection process

In accordance with article 8 of the REGULATORY AGREEMENT 14540 of 15th June 2022 that approves the regulation governing the recruitment of research staff under chapter 6 allocation of the university budget, as well as technical or operational research staff.

• The relevant Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (or person s/he delegates), as chair.
• The management team for the relevant department.
• The members of the Research Area Assessment Committee (CARAI).
• Three experts in the field pertaining to recruitment, where appropriate, appointed by the chair of the committee, having heard from the management team of the department.
• The head of the Management Office for the Research Promotion and Human Resources Programme (or person s/he delegates), acting as secretary, who may speak but not vote.

Additional comments

In accordance with Article 19.c) in Act 17/2022 of 5th September that amends Act 14/2011 of 1st June on Science, Technology and Innovation, the work of pre-doctoral research staff in training shall be assessed by the Academic Committee for the PhD Programme on an annual basis or, where applicable, the Doctoral School, for the duration they are enrolled on the programme. The contract may be terminated where they fail this assessment.
