The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden is a partnership of 13 European countries with the mission to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. The Data Management and Scientific Computing Centre (DMSC), located at the Danish Technical University (DTU) in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark provides a variety of tools to obtain, curate, monitor, and analyse data obtained at ESS.

About the Role

We are now looking to appoint a summer worker for the Scientific Information Management Systems (SIMS) Group within the Data Management and Scientific Computing Division.

The tasks and responsibilities of the group include but are not limited to:

• Delivery of critical software that make neutron scattering experiments at the ESS possible and successful.
• Develop the ESS user portal, metadata catalogue, electronic notebook and more.
• Participate in the development of existing and new web applications
• Manage the growing set of integration; the development happens in a collaborative, open-source environment

We use modern web technologies and aim to deliver software with high quality and long lifetime.

As a summer worker Web developer for SIMS, your main tasks will include:

• Familiarize yourself with the SIMS User Office Software codebase, which makes extensive use of React, TypeScript, Material UI, Express.js, and PostgreSQL.
• Improve the application by enhancing user experience (UX), fixing existing bugs, and implementing new features from the current backlog.
• Ability to quickly understand the system, its workflows, and the importance of the platform to the users.
• Write and maintain tests and update documentation where necessary.
• Deliver clean, maintainable, and well-tested code aligned with the existing architecture.

About You

A suitable background for this work would include:

• Strong, up-to-date React and TypeScript development skills.
• Experience working with NodeJS and PostgreSQL.
• Good understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles and how to apply them in application design.
• Experience writing tests using Jest and Cypress.
• Ability to quickly understand complex systems and work effectively within an existing codebase.
• Good written and oral communication skills in English.
• Minimum age 18 years.
