Hitachi Rail Denmark A/S is seeking a Signalling Engineer to join the engineering team in Copenhagen (Ballerup) with the long-term development plan to support the engineering architecture.

The Signalling Engineer will be responsible for engineering, verification, and delivery of documentation and data, working closely with internal teams, customers, and validators. The role requires a strong technical profile with ownership and teamwork, supporting ETCS architecture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Railway or similar).
  • 5–10+ years in railway signalling engineering; ETCS experience is a strong advantage.
  • Solid experience with technical documentation and engineering processes.
  • Experience with signalling design, engineering data, and railway infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools and Visio; strong MS Office skills.
  • Strong analytical, structured, and problem-solving abilities; good English.
  • Able to work independently and in a team; strong communication.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review technical documentation, drawings, and engineering data per Engineering Rules.
  • Engineer ETCS and interlocking data, including route tables and speed profiles.
  • Conduct site and signalling surveys; ensure validated input data.
  • Collaborate in cross-functional meetings and technical reviews.
  • Create and maintain Common Engineering Guidelines and solution proposals.
  • Support architecture requirements and coordinate with Hitachi subsidiaries and partners.
  • Participate in meetings providing impact analysis and resolution input.
  • Identify risks and opportunities and mitigate technical constraints.
  • Analyse and resolve defects in engineering documentation.
  • Support installation teams and handover documentation.

Job Description

We are currently looking for a Signalling Engineer to join our engineering team in Hitachi Denmark A/S with the long-term development plan to support the engineering architecture.

Engineering covers the development of the signalling solution baseline. This includes signalling layouts, speed profiles, route tables, flank protection, gradients, and balise engineering. The engineering team plays a key role in ensuring accurate and verified input data for the entire signalling design lifecycle. The role is also with the direction of supporting the architect and investigate and analyse defects and difficult architectures and setups.

The Signalling Engineer will be responsible for engineering, verification, and delivery of documentation and data, working closely with internal teams, customers, and validators. The role requires a strong technical profile with the ability to take ownership, drive engineering tasks independently, and support the wider team as a technical reference. The role will support the engineering architecture for the ETCS signalling system and support the Architect with analysis, design and solution definitions.

The position is based in Copenhagen (Ballerup) and includes site visits and collaboration with stakeholders such as Banedanmark.

Key Responsibilities and tasks
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, drawings, and engineering data in compliance with Engineering Rules

  • Perform and support engineering of ETCS and interlocking data, including engineering tables and data preparation such as Route Tables, Speed profiles, Signalling Layouts, Gradients, Flank protection tables, Balise group tables etc.

  • Conduct and contribute to site and signalling surveys, ensuring accurate and validated input data

  • Collaborate in cross-functional meetings and technical reviews

  • Creating and maintaining the Rules and Guidelines (Common Engineering Guidelines = CAE).

  • Creating and supporting the Solution Proposals for Change Requests.

  • Support the Solution Architecture and requirements (through Architectural Description) coordinating Hitachi subsidiaries, Strukton and Pintsch (through Level Crossings Work Package Manager), allowing to meet Stakeholders’ expectations through compliance with standardization and reuse policies, technology roadmap and business strategy.

  • Participate in the DMB and CCB meetings providing impact analysis and actively contributing to the resolution of the topics taken to these meetings.

  • Identifies and reviews the Technical Risks and Opportunities and the related Mitigation Plans throughout the Bid or Project and resolves Technical constraints.

  • Analyse, resolve, and follow up on defects and technical issues related to Engineering documentation

  • Support installation teams and documentation handover, including preparation of installation instructions

  • Ensure consistency, quality, and completeness of engineering deliverables within the engineering scope

  • Provide mentoring and on-the-job training to junior engineers

  • Drive resolution of customer comments and technical clarifications

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, and ways of working

Skills and experience
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (e.g. Electrical, Railway, or similar)

  • Extensive experience (typically 5-10+ years) within railway signalling engineering; ETCS experience is a strong advantage

  • Solid experience with technical documentation and engineering processes

  • Experience with signalling design, engineering data, and railway infrastructure and CENELEC standards (CENELEC EN 50126/29/50716)

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) and experience with CAD tools and/or Visio

  • Strong analytical, structured, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership, while contributing effectively in a team environment

Description

In 2012, Banedanmark, the Danish rail infrastructure, awarded a consortium composed of Hitachi and Strukton Rail with a contract to upgrade the signalling system in Jutland, the Western part of Denmark. This latter consists of approx. 1.200 km of the Danish railway network (60%) to the new European ETCS level 2 System. Since then, Hitachi in Denmark has been working on the design and building of the system in close cooperation with Strukton Rail and Hitachi peers in Germany.
