This project aims at developing AI-based methods to transform underwater imagery from a simple visual record into a quantitative tool to measure species abundance in Denmark's diverse maritime habitats.

Responsibilities And Qualifications

Your main task will be to develop AI-based computer vision methods to analyse underwater video sequences. Specifically, your primary focus will be obtaining the "MaxN" (i.e., the highest number of individuals of a single species visible in any single frame of a video) in a large collection of data to, ultimately, estimate species abundance.

The work includes:

  • Conducting cutting-edge research in deep learning areas, such as object detection, object counting, anomaly detection, self-supervised learning, and/or image and video segmentation.
  • Developing AI-based methods for detecting and identifying fish in underwater video sequences that are robust to diverse lighting, environment and image acquisition conditions.
  • Publishing and disseminating research results in leading international conferences and journals and contributing to collaboration and knowledge transfer among the project stakeholders.
  • Student supervision and contributing to the development of a growing research environment within the Viscom section.

We are looking for candidates with:

  • A research background in deep learning and computer vision,
  • Experience in developing methods for marine underwater images or similar,
  • With experience at handling a high volume of data,
  • Self-motivated and highly independent.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The period of employment is 2 years. Starting date is December 2026 (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.

The section for Visual Computing (Viscom) is one of the 10 research section of DTU Compute. Our research is focused on medical image analysis, geometry and appearance modelling, computer vision, multivariate statistics for images and analysis of 3D microstructures. Within these areas, our overarching research aim is to make methodological contributions of broad applicability but motivated by applications and often informed by our collaborations with partners in applied domains.
