Qualifications

  • Two-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS) in a relevant discipline or equivalent
  • Fluent in spoken and written English and literacy in common IT systems
  • Experience with food fermentation and microbiology
  • Familiarity with social science methods and fieldwork
  • Basic knowledge about food science, food microbiology, food systems and sustainability issues
  • Experience making fermentations, traditional and/or novel
  • Proactive in identifying opportunities and solving problems
  • Ability to work with others and independently
  • Comfortable in an interdisciplinary environment with diverse knowledge sources
  • Patient, curious and playful in interdisciplinary work

Responsibilities

  • Develop a deep interdisciplinary understanding of the field and relevant literature
  • Generate and analyse metagenomic, metabolomic, and toxicological data on in-house spontaneous solid-state fermentation starters
  • Plan, organise, and conduct a global survey of traditional solid-state fermentation starters and interview traditional producers
  • Analyse global survey data using bioinformatics and statistics and compare with in-house data
  • Share results through academic publications and practical knowledge for collaborators; explore public engagement ideas
