Job summary

DTU Aqua in Hirtshals invites applications for a PhD scholarship focused on small-scale coastal fishing methods. The successful candidate will contribute to research supporting sustainable fishing while working in a cross-disciplinary team.

The PhD project involves experimental work at sea and in the lab, collaboration with the fishing industry, and aims to improve catch efficiency and selectivity of setnets and hook-based methods across seasons. Starting February 2027, full-time for 3 years.

Qualifications

• A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) in Marine Science or Engineering.
• Strong interest and experience in fishing gears and methods.
• Experience with small-scale coastal fishery.
• Fluent in a Scandinavian language.
• Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).
• Ability to work independently on small fishing vessels.

Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct gear trials on small-scale fishing vessels.
• Collect, analyse and interpret results from scientific gear trials.
• Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present at international conferences.
