Job summary

Aegir Insights in Copenhagen seeks a Head of Engineering to own the platform and build a dedicated engineering team of five. The role blends technical leadership with hands-on development, collaborating with data scientists and developers to advance a scalable renewable energy intelligence platform.

You will guide architecture and delivery across a React/TypeScript frontend and Python/FastAPI backend, leveraging MongoDB, AWS and Kubernetes, while enabling secure multi-tenant SaaS and AI-native

Qualifications

• Educational background in computer science or software engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction of the platform: architecture, data foundations, security, reliability and build-versus-buy decisions.
• Remain hands-on: design, build and review production code across backend APIs and platform infrastructure.
• Own systems end-to-end from React/TypeScript to MongoDB, AWS/Kubernetes and external services.
• Build the Copenhagen engineering team: define roles, hire and set an operating model with ownership for engineers.
• Translate product priorities into a technical roadmap and delivery plan.

As Head of Engineering, you will own the platform behind our products and build the engineering team that runs it.

The platform combines curated data on more than 100,000 renewable energy projects, geospatial analytics, and financial models

Built on a stack of

React/TypeScript, Python/FastAPI, MongoDB, AWS, and Kubernetes.

The role spans technical direction, hands-on engineering, team building, delivery, and building the engineering function in Copenhagen

You will come in at a critical time in our growth and take the lead of a small team of 5 technical profiles ranging from Software developers to data scientists

You report to the founders and work closely with our commercial team and our in-house renewable energy experts.

This is not a management-only role. It is a hands-on engineering leadership role for someone equally comfortable designing and implementing a Python service, reviewing a data model, debugging a production issue, hiring a senior engineer, and explaining an architecture decision to the board.

Your key tasks will be to

• Own the technical direction of the platform: architecture, data foundations, security, reliability and build-versus-buy decisions
• Remain hands-on: design, build and review production code, particularly across our Python/FastAPI backend, APIs, data services and platform infrastructure
• Own systems end-to-end: be willing to trace a problem from React/TypeScript through APIs and data models to MongoDB, AWS/Kubernetes and external services, and fix it at the appropriate layer
• Build the Copenhagen engineering team: define the roles, hire as the business case develops, and set an operating model that gives strong engineers real ownership
• Translate product priorities set with the founders and commercial team into a technical roadmap and delivery plan
• Raise the engineering bar: establish pragmatic patterns for architecture, testing, APIs, code review, deployment, observability and documentation - and demonstrate those standards through your own engineering work
• Lay the foundation for secure multi-tenant SaaS, including authentication, authorization and permission‑aware workflows
• Own the technical foundations for AI‑native products and workflows, including our MCP infrastructure and secure programmatic access to Aegir's data, analytics and financial models

During the first 6-12 months, we expect the role to remain about 50-60% hands‑on while you learn the platform, establish the technical direction, and make a plan for how to grow the department.

We imagine that you

• Have an educational background in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical engineering experience
• Bring experience from similar software engineering roles
  • With experience in Python, APIs, data‑intensive systems, and cloud architecture, while being comfortable working across a modern React/TypeScript stack
  • Ideally with experience leading engineers or engineering teams, while remaining hands‑on in recent roles

Extra point if you have

• Have improved a live, complex platform without reaching for a ground‑up rewrite
• Have personally designed, built and operated production backend systems and APIs, including data models, authentication/authorisation, asynchronous workloads and integrations between systems
• Have experience designing data‑intensive applications, analytical systems or data pipelines, and making pragmatic decisions about performance, cost and maintainability
• Pragmatic and structured: you make trade‑offs explicit and tie them to cost, risk and customer value
• A people leader who hires well and gives senior engineers real ownership without losing alignment with the business
• Clear, top‑down communication with founders, commercial leaders and domain experts who are not software engineers
• Comfortable in a small company: you set direction, write code and get close enough to users and the work to help the team move
• Experience with geospatial systems, financial modelling or the energy sector is an advantage Comfortable using modern AI coding tools as part of everyday engineering and interested in how AI changes software development itself - not just in adding LLM features to products
