As the company continues to grow, Skatteguiden is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead and develop healthy, technically strong engineering teams that consistently turn product opportunities into valuable, high-quality software.

About the role

The Engineering Manager will be responsible for 1–2 product teams, typically comprising 4–10 engineers, with full people management responsibility for the engineers within their scope.

Working closely with Product Managers and engineers, the Engineering Manager will lead cross-functional product teams and create the conditions for people and teams to perform at their best. This means developing engineers, strengthening delivery, maintaining a high technical bar and continuously improving the way the teams work.

The role combines people leadership, delivery and technical leadership. While the Engineering Manager is not expected to spend their time writing code, staying close to the technology and maintaining technical credibility is important.

Ultimately, success in the role means developing teams that become more capable, accountable and increasingly autonomous over time.

Key responsibilities

People leadership

• Coach and develop engineers, supporting their professional and technical growth.
• Set clear expectations and provide frequent, actionable feedback.
• Build a culture of trust, ownership, accountability and constructive feedback.
• Own performance management, reviews, career development and compensation conversations.

Delivery & team performance

• Ensure teams deliver valuable software effectively, sustainably and at the right level of quality.
• Support planning, coordination and risk management, while removing blockers, bottlenecks and dependencies.
• Adapt involvement to team maturity, stepping in when needed while building greater autonomy.
• Use metrics and qualitative signals to improve flow, predictability and delivery performance.

Technical leadership

Skatteguiden's current app stack consists of a Java backend and a React Native frontend.

• Ensure sound technical decisions are made within the teams without becoming the decision-making bottleneck.
• Maintain sufficient technical depth to challenge assumptions, identify risks and support engineers in developing their technical judgement.
• Balance delivery with maintainability, security, reliability and technical debt.
• Stay close to the technology and occasionally dive into the code when it helps to better understand and support the team.

Product development

• Work closely with Product Management across discovery and delivery.
• Promote a product mindset rather than a project mindset, focusing on customer and business problems and outcomes rather than predefined scope.
• Encourage engineers to understand and actively participate in solving the problems behind what they build.
• Promote incremental and iterative development that delivers value and enables early learning.

Beyond the individual teams, the Engineering Manager will contribute to the broader engineering organisation through hiring, onboarding, engineering practices and organisational improvements.

Skatteguiden is looking for an experienced engineering leader who combines strong people leadership with technical credibility and a solid understanding of modern product development.

The right candidate knows how to develop engineers and teams without creating dependency and is comfortable balancing coaching and support with clear expectations and accountability.

The ideal candidate brings:

• Experience leading and developing software engineers, including performance management and career development.
• A strong technical foundation and the ability to engage meaningfully in discussions around architecture, engineering quality, reliability and technical trade-offs.
• A solid understanding of modern software delivery and concepts such as flow, WIP, lead/cycle time, throughput and predictability.
• An understanding of modern product discovery and delivery, with a preference for outcomes over output.
• The ability to navigate ambiguity and evolving ways of working.
• A collaborative and curious mindset, with a willingness to dive into technical, product or organisational details when needed.

Experience with Lean, Kanban and queueing theory is an advantage, but not a requirement.

An AI mindset

AI is an important part of Skatteguiden's ambitions – both in the product and in how the organisation works. The Engineering Manager is expected to stay curious about developments in AI and AI-assisted software development and explore how AI can improve engineering productivity, quality and delivery.

The role will also encourage teams to experiment with new ways of working while distinguishing measurable improvements from hype. As a small and focused organisation, Skatteguiden can experiment and move quickly without lengthy approval chains or slow rollouts.
