The Department currently employs approximately 280 academic and technical staff.
The Department has a strong position in international biodiversity, nature, and environmental research and is a national leader in research-based consultancy in both Denmark and Greenland. Our research examines how ecological framework conditions, historical conditions, natural processes, and human‑caused changes in nature and the environment affect surrounding nature. We study the underlying ecological and geographical mechanisms and human impact on biodiversity and ecosystems, with particular attention to how current climate change and other global human‑caused environmental changes affect nature and biodiversity.
The Department is a leading adviser to the Danish and Greenlandic authorities on environmental issues. It also leads the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring (GEM) programme, which focuses on the effects of climate change on Arctic ecosystems. The Zackenberg Research Station is one of GEM's central research sites.
