The Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE - Sustainable Architecture for Finance in Europe - (www.safe-frankfurt.de) promotes scientific research, transfer work to the public and independent policy advice on all aspects relating to the structure and functioning of the financial system. It aims to contribute to strengthening a sustainable and resilient financial system that drives innovation and serves the needs of the economy and citizens. Researchers from the fields of economics, law, and political science collaborate at SAFE.

Your tasks:

We are looking for support for a research project in the field of historical economic and financial data. As a student assistant, you will work closely with a Senior Researcher and support different stages of the research process, ranging from literature and archival research to the collection and preparation of historical data and its analysis.

An important part of the position is working with historical sources. This includes, in particular, research in libraries and archives as well as the structured collection of relevant information. You will help identify, collect, prepare, and structure historical data and make it usable for scientific analysis.

Different tools are used to prepare and analyze the data. In addition to Excel, we also use modern language models such as Gemini to explore and analyze historical sources and data more efficiently. Previous experience with these tools is not required.

You will also support the project team with other tasks arising during the research process.

The position offers you the opportunity to gain practical experience in an academic research project and insights into empirical research in economics. You will become familiar with working with historical research data and can further develop your skills in data management and data analysis. Depending on your interests, there is also the opportunity to gain initial or more advanced experience with Python and modern AI tools for research applications.

Your profile:

• You are enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program, for example, in Economics, History, Economic History, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field at a German university.
• You are interested in empirical research and in working with historical sources and data.
• You have good Excel skills.
• You have good German language skills and are able to read and understand German-language sources confidently.
• You work carefully, in a structured manner, and reliably.
• You are able to work independently and are willing to familiarise yourself with new topics and methods.

Previous experience with Python or language models is welcome, but not required.

You will be working in a very attractive working environment in the House of Finance at Goethe University with an enthusiastic team of colleagues. The position is fixed-term, with a 1-year term (option to extend), and 20 to 40 working hours per month. Working hours are negotiable.
