The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, research group “Artificial Intelligence – Multimodal Modeling and Learning”, Prof. Dr. Ralph Ewerth, is currently accepting applications for a

Research Assistant (Doctoral Researcher/PhD)

The position is offered for a period of three years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is fulltime with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13).

The project "Per:DIS – Perception of Disinformation – Analysing the Impact of Form and Content of News Video Presentations," funded by German Research Foundation (DFG) in the Priority Programme “Re:DIS – Rethinking Disinformation", investigates the perception of multimodal disinformation in news videos. The project takes an interdisciplinary approach that combines computer science, psychology, and communication sciences in order to explain and predict the reception of multimodal (dis)information. In collaboration with the project partner from psychology, computational models are to be developed that, derived from video features, allow predictions about the perception and credibility assessment of news videos.

Tasks:
  • Scientific services in research
  • Data collection, preprocessing, enrichment, and annotation: creation of a corpus of news videos, including metadata and associated user comments on social media, if available
  • Research and development of multimodal AI methods for analysing news videos (sentiment, emotionalization, etc.)
  • Research and development of multimodal adversarial AI methods for the manipulation of news
  • Research and development of multimodal AI methods for detecting disinformation that are robust against targeted manipulation
  • Communication with interdisciplinary project partners and presentation of results at international conferences
  • Publication of scientific results and reports

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to Section 2(1) of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG).

Profile:
  • MSc-degree or equivalent in computer science or a related field with a very good or at least good grade
  • Sound knowledge of computer vision at Master's level
  • Sound knowledge of machine learning (ML) methods at Master's level
  • Sound knowledge of natural language processing at Master's level are an advantage
  • Solid programming skills in Python, as well as demonstrated experience using ML frameworks
  • Strong interdisciplinary communication and teamwork skills, documented through prior collaboration with interdisciplinary research teams or external partners/clients

Disposition to own scientific qualification (e.g., a doctorate project in the area of computer vision and pattern recognition for analysing (dis-)information in news videos) is expected.

We offer:
  • Outstanding career development opportunities, e.g. towards becoming a research software engineer, including mentoring and support for planning your professional career
  • An excellent and dynamically evolving research environment in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, including three newly established AI professorships
  • Connection to hessian.AI (Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence) with exceptional collaboration opportunities and high-performance computing resources for training large-scale AI models
  • An excellent international and national research network (including connections to various institutes of the Leibniz Association and Fraunhofer Society) funding for conference participation
  • Ticket for free use of public transport in the state Hesse, Germany
  • Flexible working hours and options for remote work
