Buttimer Engineering is seeking a skilled QS to join our project delivery team in Germany. The successful candidate will be responsible for the financial and contractual management of a large Mechanical Project where we will operate as Subcontractor to a Main Contractor. This role shall therefore include working the Main Contractor in addition to management of our Subcontractor's / supply chain. The role requires ensuring the project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Cost Control & Budget Management
- Prepare and manage:
- Project cost reports.
- Cash flow forecasts.
- Cost-to-complete forecasts.
- Monitor:
- Labour costs both for hires labour and Subbies.
- Material procurement costs Tender versus Construction -Savings to be outlined and value against Margins.
- Plant and equipment - Hire costs, Weekly review with PM on Hire durations, Cranes, MEMP, Brugg Tooling Test equipment.
- Subcontractor payments - Payment Plans to be agreed prior to works starting on site.
- Track budget vs actual expenditure.
- Identify cost overruns early and report to PM & OM to align with next steps.
Valuations & Applications for Payment
- Prepare monthly interim valuations for the client.
- Measure completed works (based on drawings and site progress) to tie in with PM and Site Planner to insure progress is aligned with % Claim reported by Supervision.
- Negotiate and agree valuations with the Main Contractor.
- Ensure correct valuation of:
- Variations.
- Dayworks & Agree with Subbies prior to Invoicing.
Variations & Change Control
- Identify change events from:
- Revised drawings & Design changes.
- RFI responses and effects this has on site team and subbies - Price scope and issue to PM for sign off.
- Price variations (labour, materials, design, prelims, overhead & profit) also chase Subbies for Variation quotes prior to.
- Negotiate and agree final values with the Commercial Manager and Site PM.
- Maintain variation log and issue weekly to OM & PM along with Hours earned / Spent Cost accrued for materials.
- Prepare and issue subcontract agreements.
- Manage subcontractor payment applications along with cash flow on the project.
- Assess and certify subcontractor valuations.
- Negotiate final accounts and close out along with correct paperwork.
- Ensure both Buttimer's & Subbies compliance with contract terms.
Procurement
- Assist in procurement strategy and request weekly reports and forecast for future spending.
- Review enquiries and compare quotations.
- Commercial review of Subbie and Brugg packages.
- Ensure procurement aligns with project programme and projected cash flow on the project.
Contract Administration
- Understand the form of contract.
- Issue and respond to contractual notices from subbies and suppliers
- Monitor:
- Extension of time claims.
- Loss and expense claims - If required.
- Maintain proper commercial records on to SharePoint with limited access to insure Buttimer files are secure.
Final Accounts
- Prepare final account submission for Clients Post final account agreements with Subbies.
- Agree final variations both with Client & Project subbies.
- Close subcontractor accounts.
- Identify commercial risks early:
- Design coordination issues
- Scope gaps
- Delays affecting prelim costs
- Interface risks between mechanical and electrical trades
- Advise project manager on financial exposure
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Degree in Quantity Surveying or similar.
- 5 plus years' experience in a Quantity Surveyor role or similar, ideally within a similar industry.
- Strong knowledge of contract frameworks (e.g. NEC, FIDIC or equivalent).
- Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Project, Project cost management tools.
- Excellent analytical, numerical, and commercial awareness skills.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management abilities.
