Bayer is seeking a Principal Machine Learning Scientist in Berlin to lead ML-driven biomolecule modeling for accelerating drug discovery. You will develop, evaluate, and apply algorithms, partnering with chemists, biologists, and data scientists to translate science into impact.

You will apply state‑of‑the‑art ML methods to characterize biomolecular interactions, assess druggability, and design therapeutics.

Qualifikationen

• PhD in computational chemistry/biology, chem/bioinformatics, chemical/biological engineering or related field.
• Multiple years of post‑PhD experience in industry.
• Expertise with state‑of‑the‑art ML methods to model biomolecules (sequence‑to‑function, protein language models).
• Experience with ML workflows for characterization of biomolecular interactions, druggability, or design.
• Experience handling large datasets from drug development (sequence/omics/biophysical/structural data).
• Proficiency with bioinformatics tools mmseqs, foldseek.
• Strong Python skills and collaborative software engineering experience.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• You lead the development, evaluation, and application of machine learning algorithms and workflows for the characterization and design of biomolecules to accelerate drug discovery
• You identify opportunities for accelerating ongoing drug discovery projects with internal and external AI capabilities
• You communicate, educate, and engage with a broad set of stakeholders (chemists, biologists, computational/data scientists, R&D leadership, consortia partners, and the broader scientific community) on the state of technology and the progress of key internal initiatives
• You keep up to date with the latest advances in computational modeling of biomolecular structure, physics, interactions, and function

WHO YOU ARE

• You hold a PhD degree in computational chemistry/biology, chem/bioinformatics, chemical/biological/molecular engineering, or a related field at the intersection of life sciences and computer sciences
• You have multiple years of relevant post-PhD experience, including professional experience in industry
• You have expertise with state-of-the‑art machine learning methods to model biomolecules, for example sequence-to-function models, protein language models, co‑folding, inverse folding or steerable generative methods
• You have experience with ML‑based workflows towards characterization of biomolecular interactions, assessment of druggability, candidate screening, or design and optimization of therapeutics and delivery systems.
• You are experienced in handling, processing, integrating and analyzing large datasets related to drug development research, including sequence, omics, biochemical, biophysical, and structural biology data
• Expertise in modern bioinformatics tools (e.g., mmseqs, foldseek) is part of your profile
• You have strong Python programming skills including the scientific stack (e.g. pytorch, pandas, scikit‑learn), and experience in collaborative software engineering according to good practices
• You have a strong commitment to scientific rigor, a proven track record of scientific achievement, excellent analytical thinking skills, and a high level of self‑motivation
• Excellent written and verbal communication skill in English round off your profile

• We ensure your financial stability with a competitive salary between 104.300€ and 126.500€ per year (full‑time) plus a variable component. Your compensation is based on your qualifications, skills, and professional experience.
