Jobbeschreibung

PhD Student (f/m/d) Semiconductor Materials for Photovoltaics
Reference No.: SE 2026/13

In the Department of Structure and Dynamics of Energy Materials, we research fundamental structure-property relationships of materials for energy conversion. The aim is to understand the physical properties of materials for thin-film photovoltaics from their atomic structure and thus create the basis for renewable energy sources of the future. We have researchers from all over the world working together towards this goal. Therefore, we hold many lectures and conferences, host international guests and build collaborations within the centre and with the Berlin and international research and industrial community. In order to contribute to the fulfilment of these scientific tasks, we are looking for a committed PhD student. You can also expect varied activities in an international and appreciative environment and you will contribute to the development of renewable energies for a climate-friendly future together with researchers from all over the world.

Your Tasks
  • Synthesis of novel compound semiconductors for photovoltaic applications (emerging chalcogenides, chalcogenide perovskites, and hybrid halide perovskites)
  • Structural and optoelectronic characterization of compound semiconductors
  • Derivation of structure–property–function relationships
  • Preparation of scientific publications
  • Presentation of research results at scientific conferences and workshops
Your Profile
  • Master's degree in physics, chemsitry, materials science or geosciences
  • Sound knowledge of crystallography
  • Experience with diffraction methods (X-ray diffraction) and data analysis
  • Extensive experience in the planning, execution, and analysis of complex experiments
  • Excellent communication skills
  • German skills at C1 level and English skills at B2 level
  • High motivation for research work and teamwork
Your Benefits

As an employer, your well-being and a good balance between work and private life are important to us. That’s why we offer you a wide range of benefits:

  • The opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility to work remotely
  • Career-enhancing networking opportunities, individual guidance, and support through our Graduate Centre and Postdoc Office
  • 30 days of vacation per year and attractive remuneration according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund), plus company pension plan
  • Advisory services on family and career matters through our Office for Work & Life
  • Subsidy for the public transport “Deutschlandticket Job” and exclusive employee discounts
  • Relocation support from non-EU countries
  • German and English courses for all proficiency levels

Fixed term contract for 48 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).
