Zusammenfassung

Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) invites applications for a PhD Student (f/m/d) in the Magnons: X-rays and Models group to study magnetic excitations and ultrafast dynamics in functional oxides.

You will conduct an independent research project, develop X-ray spectroscopy methods at BESSY II and other facilities, perform experiments at synchrotron and FEL facilities, and apply advanced theoretical models to interpret data. The position is fixed-term for 48 months and paid under TVöD-Bund.

Qualifikationen

  • Master's or Diplom in physics, chemistry, or materials science with good marks.
  • Strong foundation in solid-state physics or magnetism.
  • Experience with data acquisition and analysis in experiments.
  • English proficiency at C1 level.

Aufgaben

  • Carry out an independent research project on magnetic excitations in oxide materials.
  • Develop and apply X-ray spectroscopy methods at national facilities.
  • Conduct experiments at synchrotron or FEL facilities with partners.

PhD Student (f/m/d) Magnetic Excitations in Functional Oxides

In the group Magnons: X-rays and Models at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), we investigate magnetic excitations and their ultrafast dynamics in strongly correlated materials. We are particularly interested in antiferromagnetic and altermagnetic materials with high-frequency magnetic excitations in the terahertz (THz) regime, which offer promising perspectives for future magnonic and spintronic technologies.We combine advanced X-ray spectroscopy with theoretical modelling to uncover the fundamental mechanisms governing spin-related phenomena. To interpret our experimental results, we use calculations based on multiplet theory and density functional theory (DFT).

Your Tasks
  • Conduct an independent research project on magnetic excitations and ultrafast dynamics in functional oxide materials
  • Participate in the application and further development of X-ray spectroscopy methods at BESSY II and other national and international facilities
  • Perform experiments at synchrotron radiation sources and X-ray free-electron laser facilities in collaboration with external research partners
  • Apply and further develop advanced theoretical and data analysis methods for X-ray spectroscopy
  • Analyse and interpret experimental data using appropriate theoretical models
  • Publish your findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present your results at national and international conferences and meetings
  • Actively contribute to the collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment of the group
Your Profile
  • A Master’s or Diplom degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline, with above-average academic results
  • A sound understanding of solid-state physics, magnetism, or the physics of excited states in solids
  • Basic experience with scientific data acquisition and analysis
  • Practical experience with experimental techniques for the preparation or characterisation of solid-state materials
  • Experience with X-ray spectroscopy, thin-film growth, ultrafast measurements, or scientific programming would be an advantage
  • English proficiency at C1 level
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment
  • Willingness to participate in experiments at national and international large-scale research facilities
