Zusammenfassung

TechTown Detroit is seeking a detail-oriented Nonprofit Accountant to support our nonprofit clients. You will manage fund accounting, prepare funder- and board-ready reports, and ensure compliance with ASC 958 and nonprofit standards.

This role focuses on nonprofit financial management, with opportunities to assist audits, budgeting, and cash flow analysis, while delivering clear financial guidance to boards and funders. Strong communication and integrity are essential.

Qualifikationen

About the Opportunity

TechTown Ops+ is seeking a detail-oriented, mission-driven Nonprofit Accountant to support our portfolio of nonprofit clients. This role is ideal for a professional who understands the unique financial landscape nonprofits operate in and thrives on helping mission-based organizations stay financially healthy, compliant, and accountable to their funders and boards. Deep experience in nonprofit accounting, including fund accounting, board reporting, grant/funder compliance, and ASC 958 reporting standards, is essential to success in this role. The Nonprofit Accountant will support nonprofit clients by managing financial records, preparing funder- and board-ready reports, ensuring regulatory and grant compliance, and serving as a trusted financial advisor to organizations advancing community impact. This role is primarily focused on supporting nonprofit clients, but may be required to support for-profit clients as well due to business needs.

The Impact You Will Make:
Client Support & Relationship Management
  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for assigned clients, responding promptly to inquiries and providing clear, professional guidance
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, understanding their financial needs and tailoring services accordingly
  • Provide proactive communication to help clients stay informed about financial deadlines, compliance requirements, and best practices
Nonprofit Client Support & Relationship Management
  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for assigned nonprofit clients, responding promptly to inquiries and providing clear, professional guidance grounded in nonprofit financial best practices.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with nonprofit clients, understanding their funding structures, mission priorities, and reporting obligations, and tailoring services accordingly.
  • Provide proactive communication to help clients stay ahead of grant reporting deadlines, funder compliance requirements, and board reporting cycles.
Accounting & Financial Management
  • Maintain accurate general ledger accounts and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements aligned with nonprofit financial reporting standards.
  • Manage fund accounting across multiple funding sources, maintaining clear tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds in compliance with nonprofit-specific financial requirements.
  • Track grant-specific fund usage and client awards, ensuring spending stays aligned with funder terms and restrictions.
  • Reconcile bank statements, accounts payable, and accounts receivable for nonprofit clients.
  • Process client invoices, payments, and expense reports with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management tailored to nonprofit funding cycles (e.g., grant timing, seasonal donation patterns).
Compliance & Reporting
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP, nonprofit-specific accounting standards (including ASC 958), tax regulations (e.g., Form 990 readiness), and funder-imposed requirements.
  • Prepare financial reports for nonprofit boards, funders, and other stakeholders, including grant-specific financial summaries.
  • Assist with nonprofit audits, ensuring documentation is organized, accessible, and audit-ready.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to nonprofit boards of directors, translating complex financial data, including fund balances and grant status into clear, accessible summaries for non-financial board members.
Process Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to streamline fund and grant accounting processes to improve accuracy and client experience.
  • Provide input on implementing accounting software and digital tools (e.g., grant tracking systems) to enhance efficiency for nonprofit clients.
Administrative
  • Maintain digital and physical filing systems for nonprofit client documentation, including grant agreements and funder correspondence.
  • Support client onboarding by organizing documentation, contracts, and initial setup steps specific to nonprofit financial structures.
  • Prepare internal reports, presentations, and summaries using data from various departments.
  • Track and follow up on grant reporting deadlines and other client deliverables using project management tools.
  • Maintain CRM and internal tracking systems to ensure data accuracy.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
What You Will Bring to the Table:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a professional services, nonprofit, or small-business setting
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP), financial reporting, and compliance requirements
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, including fund accounting, grant tracking, and compliance with nonprofit reporting standards (e.g., ASC 958)
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with financial reporting for nonprofit boards, funders, and audits
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple client accounts simultaneously
  • High degree of discretion and integrity in handling confidential information
Would be nice to have:
  • QuickBooks Online Advanced Certification
  • Knowledge of ASO operational models and service delivery frameworks
Salary:

The budgeted salary range for this position is $70,000 and may be adjusted according to qualifications and experience.

Work Arrangements:

This position is primarily an in-person role. We believe in-person work fosters better collaboration, stronger team dynamics, and more effective learning opportunities, especially for cross-functional projects and informal knowledge sharing.

However, we also recognize the importance of flexibility. Therefore, this role allows for periodic hybrid work, subject to manager approval and departmental needs. The specific remote work schedule can be discussed during onboarding and revisited as needed to support organizational goals and individual work-life balance.
