The Opportunity

As a Senior Network Automation Engineer supporting the AFRICOM J6, you will serve as a critical enabler for the AI and Automation team. This role is at the forefront of modernizing defense IT services, operating within a containerized DevSecOps environment to replace manual, inconsistent networking tasks with secure, resilient, and Zero-Trust compliant automated solutions. You will build interoperable automation pipelines - leveraging Python, Ansible, and RESTful APIs to interface with both legacy enterprise tools and emerging AI platforms. This is a unique opportunity to act as a technical pioneer, translating high-level Department of Defense (DoD) CDAO and FULCRUM strategies into tactical, day-to-day engineering realities that drastically reduce Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR) and improve the overall security posture of the J6 network.

The Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Automation & Scripting: Develop, maintain, and execute Ansible playbooks and Python scripts within containerized environments to automate routine network configuration, deployments, and compliance validation.

  • API Development & Integration: Design and manage secure RESTful APIs (utilizing FastAPI) to ensure seamless interoperability between enterprise tools (ServiceNow, SolarWinds, Cisco IES, Password Vaults) and future AI-driven endpoints.

  • DevSecOps & CI/CD Pipeline Management: Champion the software development lifecycle by leveraging tools like GitLab for repository management, Jenkins for automated testing, and Nexus for artifact deployment, ensuring secure and agile code delivery.

  • Network & Security Operations: Apply strong networking fundamentals to manage data routing, log scoping, and system monitoring (e.g., Elastic SIEM), while ensuring solutions align with Zero Trust architecture and cyber policy requirements.

  • Cross-Platform Systems Engineering: Provide bridging support across environments by applying foundational Windows administration concepts (MECM, LDAPS, Domain Controllers) to ensure holistic C4 network health and automated provisioning.

Qualifications

Required

  • Active DoD Secret clearance, with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline.

  • 5 to 8 years of experience in IT, DevSecOps, or Automation, with a strong emphasis on network engineering environments.

  • Proven proficiency in programming and scripting languages, specifically Python and Ansible.

  • Hands-on experience managing CI/CD pipelines and version control systems (e.g., GitLab, Jenkins).

  • Deep understanding of networking protocols, routing, switching, and security fundamentals in an enterprise environment.

  • Experience interacting with and developing secure RESTful APIs for tool integration.

  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

Desired

  • Industry-recognised certifications such as Cisco CCNA/DevNet or CompTIA Security+ (DoD 8570/8140 compliance).

  • Familiarity with data storage, message queuing, and AI tech stacks (Redis, PostgreSQL, Milvus, RabbitMQ).

  • Practical knowledge of Windows systems administration (MECM, AD/LDAPS) from an enterprise C4 perspective.

  • Understanding of federal IT service performance metrics (e.g., FISMA compliance, SLA tracking, MTTR optimization).

Level Description

  • Translates complex network operations into automated, code-based solutions.

  • Owns the end-to-end lifecycle of automation scripts and API endpoints from repository to production deployment.

  • Acts as a senior technical executor, bridging the gap between traditional network engineering and modern DevSecOps practices.
