Location: This is a work‑from‑anywhere position available in EMEA or the Americas.
Role Overview
The MAAS team is responsible for delivering our Metal As A Service hyperscale provisioning technology. Ubuntu strives to be the most scalable, cloud‑ready server distribution, and MAAS is the platform to get Ubuntu on bare‑metal servers. MAAS is a rapidly evolving stack written in Python and Go, spanning hardware detection, provisioning, web interface, API, CLI and distributed system design.
Responsibilities
- Lead a distributed team of engineers organized by time zone (Americas, EMEA, etc.)
- Coach, mentor, and develop talent, including career planning and feedback
- Set and manage expectations with engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
- Advocate modern software development practices and participate in architectural and code review
- Engage with broader Canonical teams, the open source community, and partners
- Travel to internal and external global events for 4–6 weeks per year
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related field
- Proven experience delivering software using Python, Go, or similar languages
- Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
- Familiarity with modern Linux cloud computing technologies: networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes
- Strong aptitude for understanding complex distributed systems
- Excellent written and spoken English with strong presentation skills
- Experience with agile software development methodologies
- Strong leadership skills and ability to mentor and support team members
- Result‑oriented mindset with the drive to meet commitments
- Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long
Nice‑to‑have Skills
- TypeScript with modern web frameworks (React, Angular, Svelte, or Vue)
- Data Center infrastructure management and design
