Delivery Hero is seeking an Engineering Manager to guide a payments backend team of 6-10 engineers across multiple markets. You will balance people leadership with strong technical depth, steering design and delivery in a fast-paced fintech environment.
You’ll collaborate with product, data, and business partners, uphold high standards for observability and reliability, and help scale a Postgres/Kafka based stack.
We are on the lookout for an Engineering Manager to lead one of our Payments engineering teams - a group of 6-10 backend engineers building the payments infrastructure that powers Delivery Hero across 65 countries. This role sits at the intersection of people leadership, technical depth, and cross-functional collaboration. You will grow a high-performing team, maintain a strong technical bar, and be the connective tissue between engineering execution and broader product and business goals.
Be part of building the financial backbone of Delivery Hero. You'll develop products that empower millions of customers and merchants, from seamless payments to innovative financial solutions like wallets and credit. Your work will support our path to profitability by creating financial flexibility for users and enabling smooth transactions across our markets.
Own the day-to-day leadership of a team of 6-10 backend engineers - running 1:1s, performance cycles, hiring, and onboarding with genuine care for each person's growth.
Stay close to the technical work. Participate in design reviews, architectural discussions, and RFC feedback - not to make decisions for the team, but to raise the quality of thinking and ensure sound engineering choices.
Own team-level delivery - planning, prioritization, and removing blockers - while balancing engineering quality with product velocity.
Partner with product, data, and business stakeholders to shape the team's roadmap. Translate technical constraints into product tradeoffs and ensure engineering is represented clearly in cross-functional forums.
Uphold and evolve the team's standards for code quality, testing, observability, and reliability. Foster a culture of ownership - "you build it, you run it."
Play an active role in recruiting, interviewing, and building a diverse and inclusive team culture where engineers feel empowered and psychologically safe.
Maintain a healthy on-call culture - ensuring incidents are resolved effectively, blameless post-mortems happen, and systemic issues get addressed.
Proven experience managing engineering teams (6+) in a fast-paced environment. You know how to coach through conflict and build a cohesive squad.
While you may not be coding daily, you have a deep background in distributed systems (JVM/Kotlin/Java). You can spot a flawed architectural pattern and ask the right questions about consistency, idempotency, and scaling.
You understand the lifecycle of a high-throughput Postgres/Kafka stack. You know what "good" looks like in terms of observability (SLOs/SLIs) and CI/CD.
You are proficient in agile methodologies and have a track record of delivering complex, cross-team projects on time without burning out your team.
Familiarity with the stakes of financial systems-auditability, PCI-DSS compliance, and the "zero-error" mindset required for payments.
You can explain a "cascading failure" to a Product VP and a "business pivot" to a Junior Engineer with equal clarity.
Ensuring you and all our Heroes are looked after, happy, and healthy is always on the menu. Because if you're in good shape, then we're in good shape.
