The Chair of Applied Geophysics at the Institute for Geosciences seeks the position of a

Doctoral Researcher in Seismology

Commencing at the earliest possible date.

We offer a part-time position (75%, 30 hours per week), limited to 3 years

Our research focuses on applied seismology, with an emphasis on induced seismicity, seismic monitoring, the absorption and scattering of seismic waves, and seismic noise. You will become part of a highly motivated team with a positive working atmosphere. You will support us in our research and make a significant contribution to the success of the applied geophysics team.

Your responsibilities:
  • Determination of seismic attenuation in shallow subsurface layers using the spectral ratio method, utilising the ICDP Eger borehole seismometers
  • Calculation of earthquake source spectra, moment magnitude and spectral stress drop using the radiative transfer equation
  • Determination of frequency-dependent site amplification in the region’s station network
  • Carrying out 3-D attenuation tomography (t* tomography)
  • Processing and quality control of seismological data from the ELISE Large-N Experiment and permanent networks
  • Publication of results in international journals and presentation at conferences
  • Work on an own scientific qualification project, e.g. doctorate
Your profile:
  • University degree (Master’s degree) with a focus on geophysics, earth sciences with a specialisation in geophysics, physics or a comparable subject
  • Good knowledge of digital time-series signal processing
  • Sound knowledge of at least one programming language (Python, C, Fortran or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of wave propagation, seismic attenuation or tomography would be desirable
  • Good written and spoken English
  • We expect you to be a team player with strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of German is an advantage, but not essential
We offer:
  • An exciting field of employment and autonomous work at one of the largest employers in Thuringia.
  • You will work within national and international networks alongside renowned universities and research institutions
  • Participation in international conferences
  • A Graduate Academy for doctoral candidates and postdocs
