MSU Federal Credit Union is seeking a Business Credit Analyst to evaluate creditworthiness of commercial loan applicants by analyzing financial statements and tax returns, and to prepare written credit narratives for loan decisions.

The role also covers ongoing portfolio reviews to monitor risk, adherence to internal policies, and collaboration with Loan Officers. This position offers onsite, hybrid, or remote work options within Michigan or Illinois, with occasional travel to East Lansing.

The Business Credit Analyst evaluates creditworthiness of commercial loan requests by analyzing financial statement, tax returns, and other related data. Findings are communicated through written credit narratives to support Loan Officers and Loan Committee in lending decisions.

In addition to initial credit analysis, the role includes conducting ongoing portfolio reviews to assess and monitor the level of risk within the existing loan portfolio. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills are essential, along with a foundational understanding of account and finance – or a willingness to learn.

Work Location: This position is able to work onsite, hybrid, or remote (must reside within the states of Michigan or Illinois).

To be considered for this role, candidate must currently reside, or have plans to reside upon hire, within the state of Michigan or state of Illinois as described above. Occasional travel on a quarterly basis to MSUFCU Headquarters (East Lansing, MI) may be needed.

Weekly Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm ET

An offer of employment with MSU Federal Credit Union and affiliates is contingent upon the agreed work arrangement (onsite/hybrid/remote) and work location. MSU Federal Credit Union may or may not be able to accommodate temporary or permanent changes to work arrangements or allow employment outside the city and/or state of residency in which the new hire resides at the time of offered employment.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary Ranges:
  • Level I - $27.00 - $33.00+ per hour, depending on experience
  • Level II - $33.00 - $41.00+ per hour, depending on experience
  • Senior Level -$41.00 - $51.00+ per hour, depending on experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Business Credit Analyst I
  • Analyze financial statements, tax returns, and other data to assess creditworthiness of commercial loan applicants and prepare written credit narratives summarizing financial analysis and risk assessment.
  • Support Loan Officers in loan decision-making with timely and accurate credit evaluations.
  • Conduct ongoing reviews of existing loans to monitor portfolio risk and identify potential issues.
  • Assist in identifying trends in borrower performance and industry conditions.
  • Maintain up-to-date and organized credit files in accordance with policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop a foundational understanding of accounting, finance, and credit principles.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to gather necessary financial and business information.
  • Ensure Compliance with internal credit policies and external regulatory guidelines.
  • Demonstrate initiative to learn and grow within the commercial lending and business services field.
  • Understand the Credit Union's policies and procedures to ensure compliance and accountability for managing operational risks. Adhere to established internal controls and procedures to safeguard assets, prevent fraud, and maintain the integrity of credit union operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Business Credit Analyst II
  • Evaluate complex commercial loan requests through in-depth financial and credit analysis.
  • Prepare comprehensive credit memorandums with well-supported risk assessments and recommendations.
  • Conduct ongoing monitoring of loan portfolio performance, including periodic credit reviews and risk rating updates.
  • Identify and analyze trends in borrower financials, industry conditions, and macroeconomic factors.
  • Mentor or provide guidance to other analysts and loan officers on credit analysis techniques and best practices.
  • Collaborate closely with Loan Officers to structure credit facilities aligned with risk appetite and borrower needs.
  • Ensure adherence to credit policy, regulatory requirements, and underwriting standards.
  • Participate in loan committee discussions and respond to questions regarding credit analysis.
  • Assist in identifying early warning signs of credit deterioration and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Contribute to process improvements within the credit analysis function and support departmental goals.
Senior Business Credit Analyst
  • Lead the evaluation of large and complex commercial credit requests with minimal oversight.
  • Deliver high-quality, detailed credit memorandums with clear risk assessments and recommendations.
  • Oversee portfolio management activities, including risk rating reviews, covenant monitoring, and annual credit reviews.
  • Identify and assess emerging risks across industries, borrowers, and market trends.
  • Provide strategic input to credit policy development and risk management initiatives.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and resource for underwriting standards and credit structuring.
  • Mentor and train Credit Analyst I and II, providing feedback and technical guidance.
  • Collaborate with Loan Officers and leadership on deal structuring and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Represent the credit team in credit committee meetings.
  • Drive continuous improvement in credit analysis processes, tools, and reporting.
Job Requirements
Business Credit Analyst I
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in business, finance, sales, or related field, or equivalent combination of work experience and education.
  • Experience working with Windows Microsoft 365 applications
  • Experience working in a financial institution, with a strong preference for dedicated work in underwriting or credit analysis
Business Credit Analyst II and Senior Business Credit Analyst
  • Experience working in a role dedicated to commercial credit and underwriting within a financial institution

Physical Demands and Work Environment
