NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is recruiting a Band 7 clinician to join the Virtual ED team on a permanent full‑time basis.
You will autonomously assess, diagnose and manage minor injuries using remote consultation, digital tools and senior clinical judgement, contributing to governance and service redesign.
The post is based at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus in Glasgow, with a 10:00–22:00 shift pattern across Monday to Sunday.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
Not all emergency care takes place in the Emergency Department. Join NHSGGC's expanding Virtual ED, part of Scotland's largest Virtual Hospital programme, and help shape urgent and emergency care for patients at home.
This is a rare opportunity to join one of the most exciting developments in urgent and emergency care within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Virtual ED sits within Scotland's largest Virtual Hospital programme, a service that is continuing to grow and preparing to at least double its current capacity. Clinicians have the chance to practise differently, using advanced assessment, clinical judgement and digital consultation skills to keep patients safe at home where hospital attendance is not the best or only option.
The postholder will assess and manage patients through Virtual ED pathways, initially focusing on minor injury presentations, with scope to develop across the wider Virtual Hospital as services mature. This is a clinical role, but it is also a genuine service development opportunity: the right person will help shape pathways, influence how virtual emergency care grows, and contribute to a cutting‑edge model of urgent and emergency care.
You will assess patients referred through agreed urgent care pathways, using virtual consultation, senior clinical decision making and digital tools to determine safe treatment, advice, onward referral or escalation. Patient feedback has been highly positive, with almost 99% of respondents saying they would use the service again and 98% reporting that they felt confident and reassured.
Virtual ED is not simply traditional emergency care delivered by video. It requires experienced clinicians who can assess risk, communicate clearly, and make safe decisions using remote consultation, digital systems and agreed urgent care pathways. You will work within clear clinical governance, escalation and senior support arrangements, with patient safety at the centre of all virtual decision making.
The team is small enough for individual clinicians to influence practice, but connected enough to work across the wider urgent care system. As part of the team, you will help strengthen alternatives to traditional ED attendance, support colleagues across flow and navigation pathways, and contribute to more joined‑up decision making across unscheduled care.
By supporting safe alternatives to ED attendance, the service contributes to improved patient flow, reduced avoidable hospital attendance and better use of urgent care capacity. This post offers the chance to influence pathway design, contribute to clinical governance, and help build a model of care that sits across Virtual ED, FNC+ and the wider Virtual Hospital.
Our team culture is collaborative, curious and clinically grounded. We value people who ask questions, share learning, support colleagues during busy periods and help develop safe, workable pathways rather than accepting that things have always been done one way. This is a team where experienced clinicians can contribute their judgement, learn from each other and see the impact of their work on patients and the wider urgent care system.
Applications are also welcomed from registered nurses seeking development through an Annex 21 pathway.
The role includes support from a designated Lead ANP, clinical supervision, involvement in service redesign, and potential rotation into face‑to‑face urgent care environments for clinicians who wish to maintain direct patient‑facing skills.
This post is a permanent, full‑time post of 36 hours per week.
This role is based at FNC+plus, CMB Building, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus, 1345 Govan Road, Glasgow G51 4TF.
The shift pattern is 10:00-22:00 Monday to Sunday.
We are looking for a clinician who is comfortable managing uncertainty, communicating clearly with patients remotely, and making safe decisions without relying on a traditional face‑to‑face ED setting.
We offer a wide range of supportive policies designed to enhance your employee journey, including a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme, Cycle to Work Scheme, bursary scheme and extensive learning and development opportunities.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde recognises the importance of work‑life balance and is committed to offering a range of flexible working options where service needs allow. For roles where less than full‑time hours can be accommodated, and where the tenure is listed as 'various', we encourage applications from individuals seeking flexible working arrangements. Flexible working will be included as a topic for discussion during the recruitment process.
