Offer Description

The DepartmentofLandscape, Water and Infrastructure, Institute of Landscape Planning is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate.

Extent of employment:40 hours per week
Duration of employment:1st of August 2025,limited to 31st of July 2031
Workplace: 1180 Vienna
Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1 lit. b
Gross monthly salary: (depending on previous eligible experience) at least: €4.932,90
(payable 14 times per year)

Responsibilities

  • Collaboration at the Insitute of Landscape Planning in teaching, research, outreach, and management tasks of the institute
  • Supervision of theses, particularly master's theses and dissertations, within the scope of legal possibilities (venia docendi/habilitation)
  • Regular publishing in SCI/SSCI journals (Q1/Q2)
  • Presenting research results at national and international conferences
  • Independent inter- and transdisciplinary research at an excellent post-doc level, in the following thematic areas:
    (a) Landscape governance in the context of climate change (urban and rural), with particular focus on natural hazards, social justice, and planning and policy intruments; and
    (b) land-use conflicts arising from climate change, and the intersection of natural hazzards management, biodiversity, agriculture, and conservation, which builds upon existing research at the ILAP institute and is linked to or meaningfully expand research areas within LAWI Department, such as natural hazards and land-use/landscape planning, enviromental economics and/or risk governance in the context of land use, planning and policy instruments as well as science-society interactions/transdisciplinarity
  • Taking over management and administrative duties and responsibilities on institute-level and whithing the university's self-governance system
  • Development and application of inter- and transdisciplinary methods, as well as combining qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods
  • Acquisition of national and international third-party funded project ('soft money') within competitive research programs (e.g. FWF, Horizon, ERC, WWTF), as well as implementation, accounting, and management of such projects
  • Independent organization and delivery of courses (in English and German) offered by the Institute of Landscape Planning
  • Swiftly obtain a habilitation in the research field of landscape planning or governance is desired

Required skills and qualifications

  • Language skills: Excellence skills in German and English
  • Strong interest and curiosity in inter- and transdisciplinary research in the relevant academic fields, as well as the motivation to pursue an academisc career, and the capacity, skills, and experience to achieve habilitation soon
  • Excellent post-doctoral professional experience at universities or research institution
  • Extensive experience in acquiring, implementing, reporting/accounting third party funded projects and leading national and international inter/transdisciplinary project teams
  • Expertise in the research areas of landscape planning/landscape governance, social vulnerability, biodiversity, natural hazards, transdisciplinarity, and plannning instruments
  • Significant publication record in SCI/SSCI journals
  • Extensive teaching experience, including independent delivery of courses at the bachelors's, masters's, and doctoral levels (in both German and English)
  • Strong knowledge and skills in quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as inter- and transdisciplinary research approaches
  • Experience in independently supervising master's theses and doctoral dissertations
  • Experience in with academic self-governance and management
  • Experience in collaboration with diverse stakeholders both within and outside academia
  • Language proficiency in English and German is required for teaching/education; in cases of limited German skills, a willingness to independently take language courses to reach at least B2 level within two years is expected

  • High level of independence, combined with strong communication and teamwork skills
  • International experience in teaching and research
