Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $7763 (step 5) - $8903 (step 11) per month depending on department budget and Chief's input.

  • This is a full-time, probationary, non-exempt position.

Area of consideration is limited to on-campus, state funded employees only.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Chief of Police, the sergeant is a working, first-line supervisor and performs general law enforcement and specialized work assignments. The sergeant supervises and evaluates performance of all officers on shift, including on-scene review; prioritizes workloads; conducts shift inspections, time reviews, and roll call briefings; reviews actions taken by subordinates for legal and constitutional compliance and compliance with department policy; conducts investigations routine patrols of the campus; exercises good judgment in proactive problem solving; writes accurate and complete reports; assesses officer’s equipment or other needs; participates in training activities, including firearms qualifications, and monitors the completion of training requirements of new officers.

The sergeant works with the lieutenant to ensure the missions of the police department and university are being observed and adhered to. The incumbent must remain current on changes in the law and regulations and maintain a professional relationship with the entire campus community and other law enforcement agencies.

One sergeant is normally on duty each shift. The sergeant normally works 3/12 shifts with an 8 hour shift every other week or 4 ten-hour consecutive days 0700-1700; 1600-0200; 2100-0700), or 5 eight hour shifts with rotating shifts every 6 months.

Key Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures (Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving) and criminal codes and laws.
  • Ability to perform the full range of Police Officer duties, understand and interpret the rules and regulations of the Police Department, University policies, City regulations and ordinances, State and Federal laws, and court decisions.
  • Ability to work alternative and flexible schedules with little or no notice, think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations, and demonstrate customer service orientation.
  • Ability to assess safety and training needs of staff and conduct training, and work in a fast-paced work environment.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from a POST academy and possess current California POST Basic Course Certificate.
  • Internal California State University, Fresno Police Department candidates must, at a minimum, be serving in the capacity of Police Officer with three years of active law enforcement experience.
