Job summary

Hatch is seeking a Mechanical Designer to join the Project Delivery Group in Medellín. The candidate will be responsible for mechanical equipment layouts, 3D modeling, and creating 2D drawings from 3D models, under the supervision of the Lead Mechanical Engineer.

Ideal candidates have 10–15 years of experience in large multidisciplinary EPC/EPCM projects, with strong knowledge of plant processes and industry codes. Prior exposure to Bentley OpenPlant is preferred.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience 10–15 years in mechanical design for process plants and EPC/EPCM environments.
• Experience with plant layout of mechanical equipment and 3D modeling.
• Exposure to Bentley OpenPlant or similar 3D software is required or preferred.

Responsibilities

• Produce mechanical equipment layouts, models and drawings per project requirements under supervision.
• Interpret owner/user requirements and project mission.
• Coordinate draftspersons and monitor drawing release and records.
• Create 3D equipment modeling and 3D design, generate 2D drawings from 3D model.
• Perform design and drafting per standards and project procedures.
• Conduct clash detection and material takeoffs for procurement.
• Support operability reviews and HAZOP familiarity is a plus.

As the successful candidate, you will:

• Be responsible for the production of mechanical equipment layouts, models and drawings in accordance with project requirements under the supervision of the Lead Mechanical Engineer
• Have sound knowledge in the design of project specific mechanical components or systems, as well as fundamental knowledge of the plant processes.
• Understand the owner/user requirements and the project mission
• Assist in interpreting the plant PFDs, P&IDs, and plant battery limits and constraints
• Coordinate the work of draftspersons and senior draftspersons in the preparation of contract drawings, record keeping and monitoring
• Perform conceptual layout work as well as check drawings prior to release
• Prepare 3D equipment modeling and 3D design
• Generating 2D drawings from the 3D model as required by the project
• Perform the design and drafting of mechanical plant models using applicable standards, project technical specifications and enterprise or project procedures.
• Execute designs following the mechanical and layout design criteria developed
• Use vendor data, drawings and information to develop and verify the model
• Create and maintain check sheets for all equipment as vendor data is received. Back model all changes as required.
• Perform clash detection of models with other discipline models
• Provide material quantity takeoffs for estimating purposes or inclusion into bulk commodity purchases and installation contracts
• Conduct operability and maintainability reviews, walkthroughs. Familiarity with HAZOP studies will be an advantage.

You bring to the role:

• Extensive experience between 10 to 15 years
• Exposure in Bentley OpenPlant preferred. At least exposure to similar 3D software is must
• Experience within a large project, multidisciplinary EPC/EPCM environment
• Detailed design and modeling skills for the plant layout of mechanical equipment
• Thorough knowledge of industry or regulatory standards, regulations and codes pertinent to the design and systems related to the project
• For senior designer role, should be able to lead small teams, plan and supervise the work of others
• Understanding of other discipline interfaces and requirements
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Collaborate on exciting projects to develop innovative solutions
