Director | People, Finance & Operations Leader. Driving Talent Strategy, Workforce Operations & Client Success
Controller to Grow into Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
About the Role
We are seeking a strategic finance leader who can balance hands-on financial operations with long-term financial strategy. While the title begins as Controller, this role is intentionally designed to grow into Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for a fast-growing, nationally expanding commercial services company.
This leader will own daily financial operations- cash flow, AR/AP, payroll, and reporting-while also driving debt refinancing, profitability initiatives, and scalable financial processes. The right candidate will bring a startup mentality: quick to read, process, and decide; resilient under pressure; and confident leading up to the CEO while mentoring a distributed accounting team.
The role requires both seasoned leadership presence and the ability to “roll up your sleeves” to solve tactical issues without losing sight of bigger-picture planning and scalability.
About the Company
This VirtForce Strategic Partner is a fast-growing commercial services company scaling nationally. The leadership team blends entrepreneurial vision with operational discipline, supported by robust systems like QuickBooks Online, Salesforce, and ADP. The accounting team is fully remote and primarily composed of working parents, reflecting the company’s commitment to flexibility, accountability, and integrity in the workplace.
- 100% Remote, US-based role
- Direct partnership with CEO/COO and executive leadership
- Pathway to CFO role, influencing company strategy and growth
- Flexible, collaborative culture with a remote-first accounting team
Location & Compensation
- Remote, full-time (1099 to W2 transition possible)
- 15 hours per week $75-85/hr for the first 90-120 days
- Occasional travel may be required
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a seasoned finance leader with CPA credentials (or equivalent experience), proven success in companies generating $10M+ in annual revenue, and the agility to thrive in fast-paced, high-growth environments.
You bring:
- Strong leadership presence- able to inspire accountability and mentor teams.
- The confidence to lead up to the CEO and down through the team.
- Resilience and adaptability- comfortable when things get tough, with a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset.
- A balance of day-to-day discipline (AR/AP, payroll, collections) and strategic foresight (forecasting, debt refinancing, ERP transition).
- Comfort rolling up your sleeves while steering the company toward long-term profitability and scalability.
Responsibilities
Financial Operations (Daily & Weekly)
- Monitor daily cash position and provide leadership with visibility into balances, receivables, and payables.
- Build and maintain a rolling monthly cash flow forecast.
- Oversee vendor payments, payroll, and categorization of non-routine expenses in QuickBooks.
- Lead the month-end close process, ensuring all jobs are billed and accruals are recorded.
- Prepare accurate, timely monthly financial statements.
- Provide visibility into EBITDA growth, gross margin improvement, and cost efficiency.
Strategic Leadership
- Lead debt refinancing negotiations and design cost-effective financing structures.
- Improve forecasting, budgeting, and reporting systems across departments.
- Partner with CEO/COO and department heads to align financial planning with business goals.
- Mentor and manage a remote accounting team while improving collaboration with operations.
- Ensure payroll is on time, proactively managing receivables, vendor payments, and credit lines, while maintaining a 6–8 week buffer for payroll and fixed expenses.
- Own accurate job-costing discipline across service lines (painting, janitorial, turnover, restoration), ensuring materials and labor hours are correctly classified with clear gross margin visibility.
- Lead vendor and client negotiations, securing favorable terms and structuring collections processes with large, slow-paying clients.
- Evaluate and recommend ERP migration (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct) to support national scale.
- Thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, balancing tactical problem-solving with strategic vision.
Qualifications
- CPA (or equivalent experience) strongly preferred; MBA or advanced financial training a plus.
- 3+ years of experience in companies with $10M+ annual revenue, ideally in growth/expansion environments. Startup experience preferred.
- Expertise in cash flow management, debt refinancing, and financial reporting.
- Skilled in QuickBooks Online, Salesforce, and ADP (Run/Workforce Now).
- Strong communicator with a direct, decisive, and credible leadership style.
- High emotional intelligence with the ability to inspire accountability and lead change.
- Process-driven with proven success mentoring and managing accounting teams.
