ALMA Observatory in Chile is seeking an Entry-Level Mechanical Technician Trainee to support maintenance of mechanical equipment at high-altitude facilities (OSF and related sites). You will assist in programmed maintenance and corrective repairs, read technical drawings, and log tasks in CMMS with a team at 2900–5000 masl, on an 8x6 schedule under a long-term contract.

No prior experience is required; English notes are basic for manuals.

Responsabilidades

  • Understand and apply ALMA health, safety, environment policies and procedures
  • Analyze manuals, service letters, and catalogs for maintenance tasks
  • Participate in on-the-job training activities
  • Perform programmed maintenance and corrective repairs on mechanical equipment
  • Diagnose and repair simple to moderate malfunctions
  • Log tasks in the CMMS and related software
  • Collaborate with other staff and assist in related areas as needed
  • Carry out additional tasks as assigned by the Organization

Descripción del empleo

The Mechanical Technician Trainee (Entry Level) role requires an early-career technician to support the maintenance of mechanical equipment under IMG's responsibility. This equipment includes generators, pumps, motors, compressors, hydraulic systems, and others, mostly related to the Generation Plant that includes LPG and Diesel stations, three multifuel turbines, and auxiliary systems.


The position assists Technicians and Operators in performing both programmed and corrective maintenance tasks of a regular to moderate technical difficulty.


He/she will comprise a multidisciplinary team, which will also be requested to support other areas of ALMA's technical areas, supporting the top-level goal of high availability of assets, safety, and high-performance operation of the Observatory.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Understand and apply all of ALMA's Policies, Plans, and Programs related to Health, Safety, Environment, and Communities across all premises of Risk Management and ALMA Fundamental Statements and Values.

  • Analyze, understand, and apply ALMA's Procedures and all related technical information available within Service Manuals, Spare Parts Catalogues, Special Instructions, Service Letters, or any other means for carrying our his/her task, thus paying special care to abide by all given aspects on Quality, Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Safety.

  • Participate actively in "on-the-job" training activities and working experiences as required.

  • Accomplish tasks on both programmed maintenance and corrective repairs for mechanical equipment under IMG responsibility.

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and repair simple to moderate level malfunctions on mechanical systems and equipment components.

  • Fill in task and assigned job reports by using the CMMS web-based application, together with the use of all other computing applications, in order to log whatever information related to the already accomplished tasks.

  • Perform assigned tasks dutifully and proactively. Assist activities from other specialties within the scope of his/her abilities and comply with all safety and technical requirements.

  • Actively interact with other areas' staff, both internal and external, in order to ensure a proper collaborative and coordinated work space at the site.

  • Carry out any other previously designated task given by the Organization, in relation to its specialty and functions.


Requirements

Minimum requirement (must have):


  • Mechanical Technician Degree (4 semesters – Higher Education Institution)

  • No working experience is required.

  • Ability to read/interpret technical drawings and technically competent in his overall knowledge.

  • Technical ability using regular mechanical hand-tools, as different type of wrench, screwdriver, pliers, levels, measuring tools, electrical tools, et cetera.

  • Physically apt to work at High Geographical Altitude (Working sites are located at 2,900 and 5,000 meters above sea level).

  • English Level: A1 with the ability to read and understand equipment manuals, basic instructions, and technical documentation in English.

  • Basic user experience for working with spreadsheets, word processors, planning programs and diverse web utilities.


Desirable Requirements (an asset if present):


  • Working experience in the maintenance or operations of mechanical equipment/systems/machinery.

  • Generation Systems Operations and/or maintenance knowledge and/or experience is an asset.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff within the Organization, taking into special consideration that ALMA's environment is multinational and multicultural.

  • Team spirit, willing to learn and collaborate with his/her peers, independent, self-organized, proactive, flexible, diligent, and autonomous person.

  • Understanding and compliance with HSEC regulations and the concepts of Safety and Risk Management.


WORKING CONDITIONS


  • This is a long-term position that starts with a one-year contract, then is renewable for another year, then indefinite.

  • The position is based at the ALMA Operations Support Facility (OSF), (2900 masl) and occasionally at the Array Operations Site (5000 masl), near San Pedro de Atacama, working an 8x6 shift schedule (8 days of work, followed by 6 days off). Transportation to and from designated pick-up points is provided.

  • Physical health compatible with high altitude conditions. A successful High Altitude Medical Exam is a necessary condition of employment.

  • Work is typically performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, near moving mechanisms and/or electrical equipment.

  • Occasionally required to crouch, kneel, climb, balance, and stoop.
