The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, part of NOIRLab, seeks an exceptional Active Optics Control Scientist to lead optimization of the observatory’s active optics performance and deliver world-class image quality from Cerro Pachón, Chile.
You will work with scientists, software and optical engineers, and operations teams across an international organization to advance performance during commissioning and survey operations.
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is beginning one of the most ambitious scientific projects in history: the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), a ten-year survey designed to transform our understanding of the universe. From probing dark matter and dark energy to discovering transient cosmic events and mapping our Solar System, Rubin will generate an unprecedented view of the sky.
To achieve this mission, Rubin relies on one of the most sophisticated active optics systems ever deployed. We are seeking an exceptional Active Optics Control Scientist to lead the optimization of the observatory's active optics performance and help deliver world-class image quality from a revolutionary astronomical facility located on Cerro Pachón, Chile.
This is a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers passionate about optical systems, control algorithms, large-scale scientific instrumentation, and operational excellence.
As the Active Optics Control Scientist, you will play a critical role in advancing the performance of Rubin's active optics system during operational commissioning and survey operations. You will:
The NSF NOIRLab is the preeminent US national center for ground-based, nighttime optical and infrared astronomy. NOIRLab is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) which operates as a matrix organization, providing services across a range of programs: Gemini, Rubin, MSO (CTIO and KPNO), and CSDC; with facilities in three geographic locations: Arizona, Chile and Hawai'i. The mission of NOIRLab is to enable breakthrough discoveries in astrophysics by developing and operating state-of-the-art ground-based observatories and providing data products and services for our community.
