Job Description
The Special Education Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to students with special health care needs, from routine to complex. This district-wide role supports students' access to education by managing medical conditions, implementing individualized health plans, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Current assignment at Cascade Elementary School.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to students with complex medical needs (e.g., mobility, toileting, positioning, feeding tubes, tracheostomies, seizure disorders).
- Implement and monitor Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
- Develop and implement student health plans in collaboration with school nurse.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and district policies.
- Monitor student health status and respond to medical emergencies.
- Work extended days as needed to accommodate student transportation requirements.
- Accurately complete and submit Medicaid forms and related documents.
- Collaborate with general education and special education teachers to provide needed accommodations or modifications per IEP.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Participate in IEP meetings and collaborate with IEP team in the development and implementation of the IEP.
- Collaborate with school nurse.
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, administrators, and families to support student success.
- Communicate appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with parents, administrators, other school personnel, and health care providers.
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.
Required Endorsements and Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Iowa.
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) (or obtained within first six months).
- Mandatory Reporter.
- Knowledge of special health care needs of children.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Full-time position; 190 school days per year.
