Job summary

Exa is an applied AI lab building a search engine unlike anything seen before. We crawl the web, train embedding models, and design high-performance vector databases to retrieve it.

As a backend engineer, you will play a critical role in our search architecture and help shape systems that operate at web scale. We seek researchers who can build transformers in PyTorch, design large-scale datasets, and supervise data where ground truth is not yet defined.

Qualifications

• Graduate-level ML experience or PhD with relevant research
• Ability to build and optimize transformer models in PyTorch
• Experience creating large-scale datasets and supervision strategies
• Comfort with ambiguous ground truth and problem formulation
• Interest in web-scale information retrieval and credibility

Responsibilities

• Contribute to backend architecture for large-scale search
• Prototype and deploy ML models and systems
• Collaborate with research and infrastructure teams
• Improve parsing, ranking, and retrieval quality
