Job description

About EH Energy Engineering

EH Energy is developing cutting-edge fuel cell technology for heavy-duty mobility and large-scale stationary power applications. Our uniquely redesigned product delivers a significantly more compact fuel cell system with high power density and lower production costs. In response to the challenges of climate change and the global shift toward decentralized energy, EH Energy provides high-performance, cost-effective fuel cell solutions to our clients and partners.

To support our rapid growth and bring our systems to global markets, we are seeking a Certification Engineer. In this critical role, you will take full ownership of our product compliance roadmap, bridging the gap between innovative engineering and strict global regulations. You will lead hazard and risk assessments, define certification strategies across international markets (EU, North America, marine), and interface directly with notified bodies and classification societies to ensure our fuel cell systems are safe, fully compliant, and market-ready.

This role requires a full-time, on-site presence at our office in Nyon, Switzerland. We are unable to offer remote or hybrid arrangements, so candidates should be based locally or prepared to relocate.

Key responsibilities
Certification strategy and project management
  • Identify applicable directives, regulations, harmonised standards and class rules early in the development cycle and translate them into design requirements (EU, North America, marine)

  • Select and manage notified bodies, NRTLs, classification societies and test laboratories, own budgets, schedules and contracts for certification work

  • Plan and witness type tests, factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT)

Safety engineering and risk analysis
  • Lead risk assessments to ISO 12100 and hazard studies (HAZID, HAZOP to IEC 61882)

  • Lead design and process FMEA (IEC 60812) for stacks, balance of plant, containers and fuel processing

  • Run explosion-protection assessments: hazardous area classification (IEC 60079-10-1), ventilation and gas detection concepts, and equipment selection

  • Specify and verify safety functions to ISO 13849 (PL) and IEC 61508, including safety requirement specifications and validation reports

Compliance and technical documentation
  • Compile and maintain technical construction files, CE Declarations of Conformity, type-approval dossiers and certification reports

  • Write and review user, installation, operation and maintenance manuals, safety instructions and labelling

  • Maintain the standards register and assess the impact of new or revised standards

  • Manage certification change control: assess design changes for impact on existing certificates

Collaboration and continuous improvement
  • Act as the internal authority on certification scope: ensure in-service conformity of series production with certified designs, and support procurement and supply chain on material and packaging compliance (e.g. RoHS, packaging regulations).

  • Support design reviews and supplier qualification, including component certificates (ATEX, PED, electrical)

Standards and regulatory scope

The role covers, but is not limited to, the frameworks below. Working knowledge of most is expected; deep expertise in several is required

  • IEC 62282 series, CSA/ANSI FC 1:2021, ISO 16110-1 and Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230

Required qualifications
  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical, process or safety engineering, or equivalent

  • 5+ years in product certification, compliance or safety engineering for complex electromechanical or process equipment (energy, gas, process, machinery or marine)

  • Direct experience with hydrogen or fuel cell systems and the IEC 62282 series, CSA/ANSI FC 1 or ISO 16110

  • Proven track record of taking products through CE marking and third-party certification with notified bodies or NRTLs

  • Hands-on experience leading FMEA, HAZOP and risk assessments, and documenting them to auditor standard

  • Solid knowledge of ATEX / IECEx, hazardous area classification and explosion-protection concepts

  • Experience specifying and validating safety functions to ISO 13849 and/or IEC 61508

  • Excellent technical writing: clear, structured, audit-ready technical files and manuals

  • Fluent English, written and spoken

Preferred qualifications and personal profile
Nice to have
  • Marine type approval with a classification society (DNV, LR, BV, ABS) or IGF Code projects

  • Experience with fuel processing, reformers or fire equipment, and with pressure equipment under PED

  • Certified functional safety qualification or ATEX/IECEx competence certification

  • Familiarity with North American codes (NEC, NFPA) and UL/CSA certification

Personal profile
  • Rigorous and structured, with a strong safety mindset and an eye for detail

  • Pragmatic: finds compliant solutions that keep development moving

  • Confident communicator with engineers, auditors, authorities and customers

  • Self-driven in a fast-growing, scale-up environment; comfortable owning topics end to end
