Empa in Switzerland invites applications for a PhD position focused on design, synthesis, and multiscale characterization of metamaterials for soft robotics. The student will work within the SAM3 network and be co-advised by EPFL and Empa, based at the Empa High Performance Ceramics Laboratory in Dübendorf.

The project includes international stays and a 3‑year full‑time appointment starting from Oct 2026, with emphasis on simulation‑guided design, light‑based 3D printing, and structure–property

Qualifikationen

  • Master degree in materials science or mechanical engineering, with <5 years since degree.
  • Strong background in mechanics of materials and simulations.
  • Experience with material characterization methods (EM, nanoindentation) is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in English; German or French is a plus.

Aufgaben

  • Design, simulate, and synthesize metamaterials for soft robotics.
  • Characterize morphology, microstructure, and mechanical behavior under varying conditions.
  • Conduct multiscale characterization to relate process, structure, and properties.
  • Collaborate with EPFL and Empa teams; publish findings.
