Job summary

ETH Zurich's Environmental Microbiology group invites applications for a fully funded 4-year Doctoral Position. The project explores alkaliphilic methanogenic archaea, their energy conservation at high pH, and methane biosignatures.

The work combines anaerobic cultivation, physiology, and biochemistry in an interdisciplinary setting. We seek a MSc in microbiology or related field with experience in anaerobic cultivation or protein biochemistry, strong English communication, and curiosity about

Qualifications

MSc in microbiology, environmental sciences or related field; strong foundation in lab techniques.
Experience in anaerobic cultivation or protein biochemistry is advantageous.
Excellent communication skills in English and a demonstrated enthusiasm for experimental work.

Responsibilities

Conduct anaerobic cultivation and physiology experiments on alkaliphilic methanogens.
Investigate energy conservation and carbon acquisition at high pH.
Characterize methane signatures and compare with abiotic methane.
Collaborate across microbiology, geochemistry and origin-of-life research.
