Job summary

ETH Zürich invites applications for a fully funded 4-year Doctoral Position in Environmental Microbiology within the Environmental Systems Science Department under Prof. Marie Schölmerich.

The project investigates physiology and bioenergetics of alkaliphilic methanogenic archaea, using anaerobic cultivation, physiology and biochemistry. We value diversity and encourage applicants from underrepresented groups.

Qualifications

• MSc in microbiology or related field.
• Experience in anaerobic cultivation and/or protein biochemistry is an advantage.
• Curiosity about fundamental questions and enthusiasm for experimental work with good English.

Responsibilities

• Conduct anaerobic cultivation experiments to study alkaliphilic methanogens.
• Investigate physiology and bioenergetics under high pH conditions.
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team spanning microbiology, geochemistry and origin-of-life research.
