Zusammenfassung

CERN in Switzerland invites applications for a Mechanical Technician within the SY-STI-BDE Section to design, assemble, install and maintain beam-intercepting devices for the accelerator complex.

You will handle CAD drawings, machining, assembly of collimators, documentation, and safety-critical support, working onsite in a multidisciplinary team; fluency in English or French with willingness to learn the other language is expected.

Aufgaben

  • Participate in purchase, storage and shipment of raw materials and components.
  • Condition components to meet Ultra-High Vacuum requirements for collimators.
  • Machining of simple parts from CAD drawings.
  • Assemble collimators and sub-components and their auxiliary systems.
  • Participate in the assembly of HL-LHC beam dump systems.
  • Maintain all related documents and databases.
  • Assist in installation, commissioning and maintenance of equipment.
  • Manage disposal/storage of radioactive parts and equipment.
  • Provide mechanical and logistics support.
  • Contribute to mechanical support activities across CERN facilities.

The SY-STI-BDE Section oversees the conceptual design, construction, operation, and maintenance of beam-intercepting devices across the CERN's accelerator complex. The beam intercepting devices are precision mechanical equipment working in harsh environments that must be very reliable to guarantee the operation of CERN accelerators.

You will support safety-critical systems and an efficient operation of CERN's accelerators.

Your responsibilities
  • Participate in the purchase, storage and shipment of raw material and components.
  • Handle the conditioning of several components to be compliant with the Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) requirements of collimators.
  • Perform the machining of simple parts based on drawings produced with CAD programs.
  • Be active on the assembly of collimators and several sub-components and its auxiliary systems.
  • Participate in the assembly of the HL-LHC beam dump systems.
  • Keep track and maintain all related documents and databases.
  • Take an active role in the installation, commissioning and maintenance of the equipment.
  • Manage the appropriate disposal/storage of radioactive parts and equipment withdrawn from the facility.
  • Provide mechanical and logistics support.
  • Contribute to mechanical support activities around different facilities at CERN.

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree are not eligible.

Additional Information

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Job flexibility: Fully Onsite

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Use of certain mobile work equipment or equipment used for lifting loads (lifting equipment, bridge cranes, aerial work platforms, etc.) requiring a driving authorisation.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
