Zusammenfassung

CERN seeks a Mechanical Technician to support CMS detector upgrades with workshop-based mechanical work, detector system installation, and tooling design for CMS subdetectors, plus radioprotection duties in experimental areas.

You will join the CMS Technical Coordination team, coordinating with subdetector groups and CMS technical support, while leading a mechanical workshop and providing hands-on support in manufacturing, assembly, structures and welding.

Qualifikationen

Aufgaben

• Take responsibility for safety and radioprotection in subdetector removal/installations.
• Manage a mechanical workshop, advise CMS subdetector teams, ensure equipment availability and proper use.

• Develop, test, on-site installation and operation of custom tooling for subdetectors.
• Operate and maintain hydraulic, mechanical and electromechanical systems.
• Organise and supervise storage of subdetector equipment in CMS spaces at CERN.
• Assist safety officer, supervise infrastructure safety work, use mobile crane and forklift as needed.
• Serve as technical contact for mechanical activities with subdetector teams and CMS Technical Coordination managers.

What you'll do

• As a mechanical technician, you will contribute to upgrade projects of the CMS detector, covering a broad range of responsibilities. These include workshop‑based mechanical work, installation of detector systems, and the design and use of tooling for the removal and installation of CMS sub‑detectors, as well as radioprotection duties in experimental areas and associated laboratories.
• You will also take on coordination and operational responsibilities within the CMS Technical Coordination team, working closely with sub‑detector groups and CMS technical support teams.

Your responsibilities

• Take responsibility for activities related to safety and radioprotection for subdetector removal and installation, working with CMS safety officers and subdetector teams, operating in radioprotection‑classified areas, and applying safety rules.
• Manage a mechanical workshop, advising and assisting CMS subdetector teams, ensuring the availability and proper use of equipment and tools, and supplying consumables.
• Provide technical support and hands‑on assistance to CMS subdetector project teams operating within the CMS laboratories at CERN, in the fields of mechanical manufacturing, assembly, structures, and welding.
• Take part in the development, testing, on‑site installation, and on‑detector operation of custom tooling for subdetectors, working with subdetector technical teams.
• Operate and maintain hydraulic, mechanical, and electromechanical systems.
• Organise and supervise the storage of subdetector equipment in CMS‑reserved spaces at CERN, ensuring proper inventory and space management.
• Assist the territorial safety officer of the building where the mechanical workshop is located, supervising work requested on infrastructure for general safety, and using a mobile crane and forklift when needed.
• Serve as the technical contact for mechanical activities with subdetector teams and for space areas under your responsibility, reporting regularly to the Technical Coordination managers.

Your profile

• Experience in radioprotection and the ability to work in classified areas.
• Proven ability to manage a mechanical workshop, including the use of standard machines and tools.
• Strong organisational skills for coordinating teamwork and on‑site technical activities.
• Proficiency in reading 2D and 3D technical drawings and manufacturing mechanical parts accordingly; experience in producing 2D and 3D drawings is an asset.
• Solid background in the design, construction, and assembly of mechanical components and customised tooling.
• Experience in the installation of structures and the use of specialised tooling for handling large equipment.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Proficiency with the operation and maintenance of hydraulic, mechanical, and electromechanical systems is considered a plus.
• Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanics or Manufacturing Methods or a related field.
• Trainings/certificates considered a plus: welding certificate, radioprotection formal training, hydraulic certificate.

• Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
