CERN seeks an Applied Physicist to lead the development of an experimental setup studying beam-dust interactions in accelerator environments. You will design, build, and commission tests, combining computational work with hands-on studies to advance accelerator research.

Responsibilities include modeling charging mechanisms of dust on surfaces, executing tests to validate models, and exploring mitigation strategies for dust-induced beam losses in future facilities.

Qualifikationen

• Master's degree with 2–6 years of professional experience since graduation or PhD with up to 3 years of professional experience since graduation.
• National of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State; eligibility restrictions apply.
• No CERN fellow or graduate contract previously.

Aufgaben

• Design and develop a dedicated test stand to study beam-dust interactions in accelerator environments.
• Conduct cutting-edge research in collaboration with beam physics, machine protection, and vacuum technology teams.
• Develop and apply physics models for charging and release mechanisms of macroscopic dust grains on conducting and insulating surfaces.
• Design and execute experimental tests to validate theoretical models.
• Investigate controlled methods for producing and reproducing beam-dust interaction events.
• Identify and propose mitigation strategies to minimise dust-induced beam losses in future facilities.
