The Internship Programme

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities.

• a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
• b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
• c) are sponsored by governmental/non government institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
• d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
• e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

Background Information

The Financial Compliance and Support Unit (FCSU) is part of the Department of Financial and Administrative Management (DFAM). The Unit provides financial compliance advice and support to strengthen organizational accountability and coordinates financial oversight across headquarters, global shared service centres, and regional and country offices, ensuring consistent application of financial policies and responsive, risk-aware, and solutions-oriented approaches.

The Intern – Financial Compliance Support Unit will support the team in enhancing financial compliance processes, digital initiatives, and operational support services across the Organization. This role will provide valuable experience in financial compliance practices, policy application, and the use of emerging technologies in a financial management context. The internship offers an opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in compliance monitoring, financial policy advisory support, and the implementation of intelligent automation tools, while developing skills in communication, analytical thinking, client orientation, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and regulatory compliance.

Supervision

• Under the overall supervision of the Head, Financial and Administrative Compliance in Headquarters (HQ), the Intern will assist in facilitating team activities and initiatives.

Learning Objectives

• Develop basic skills in project management and coordination across various stakeholders.
• Gain exposure to IOM’s institutional tools, procedures and internal coordination processes.
• Build professional skills in teamwork, communication, organization and working in a multicultural environment.

Training Components and Learning Elements

• The Intern will gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
• Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as an intergovernmental organization in the field of Migration.
• Develop knowledge of how business partnering is executed in a large UN Organization.
• The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.
• The Intern will have the possibility to interact with IOM staff within Headquarters and IOM Missions.

Responsibilities

• 1. Financial Compliance and Operational Support Assist in supporting financial compliance activities by helping compile, organize, and analyse information related to financial policies, procedures, IPSAS requirements, and internal controls, under the supervision of the Unit.
• 2. ERP and Business Process Support Support ongoing business process improvement initiatives related to Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP (WAVE) by assisting with business requirement documentation, user testing activities, and the preparation of process guidance materials.
• 3. AI and Digital Transformation Support Support DFAM's AI and digital transformation initiatives through research, documentation, data analysis, and administrative assistance.
• 4. Stakeholder Coordination and Administrative Support Provide coordination and administrative support for meetings, workshops, training sessions, and departmental initiatives. Prepare meeting agendas, record action points, follow up on deliverables, and liaise with Headquarters, Regional Offices, Country Offices, and the Global Shared Services Centre (GSSC) as required.
• 5. Other Duties Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

• Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a degree program in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

Experience

• Experience in the usage of office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and knowledge of spreadsheet and data analysis.

Skills

• Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., Oracle Fusion Cloud or SAP) and with finance and audit data is an advantage;
• Basic knowledge of migration issues and functioning of International Organizations;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Demonstrated time management skills and ability to self-organize; and,
• Excellent attention to detail.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).

Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Notes

Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.

IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
