Zusammenfassung

ETH Zurich's Engineering Geology group seeks a motivated PhD student specializing in computer vision to work on debris flow motion, timelapse data, and optical-flow based algorithms. The role includes dataset analysis, algorithm development, and contribution to teaching, with opportunity to pursue third-party funding.

The position is fully funded for four years, starting as early as Sept 1, 2026, with strong emphasis on independent work and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifikationen

  • Master's degree in Computer Vision, Data Science, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Remote Sensing, Engineering Geology or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise and interest in machine learning and computer vision with emphasis on object tracking, optical flow and sensor fusion.
  • Knowledge of rock mechanics, soil mechanics and/or landslide processes is beneficial.
  • Prior experience with point cloud processing is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.

Aufgaben

  • Improve understanding of debris flow motion mechanisms in the Engineering Geology group.
  • Process and analyze field datasets including timelapse point clouds and video imagery.
  • Develop advanced algorithms focusing on optical flow and object detection.
  • Interpret results to advance debris flow understanding and contribute to monitoring systems.
  • Support teaching and help develop own research ideas for third party funding.
