The International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) invites applications for the position of Information Analyst within the Investigation and Analysis Section.

The incumbent will work under a P3 Information Analyst to conduct searches, research and analytical work supporting identification, collection, collation and analysis of multi-source information concerning alleged violations of international humanitarian law and human rights abuses in the Syrian Arab Republic since 2011.

Qualifikationen

  • Two years of progressively responsible work experience in information analysis for investigations, international humanitarian law or human rights.
  • Certification or training in intelligence analysis is desirable.

The positions are located within the Investigation and Analysis Section (IAS) of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under International Law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (IIIM). The incumbent will report to the P3 Information Analyst assigned undertaking searches, research and analytical work for the purposes of identification, collection, collation and analysis of multi-source information concerning alleged violations of international humanitarian law and human rights violations and abuses, in support of the IIIM’s structural investigations, responses to requests for assistance, and/or investigation and case building activities.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Under the guidance of a P3 Information Analyst, assists in the development of research and analysis strategies and conducts research to identify relevant evidence and open source information to support the development of analytical products and investigations that can further criminal accountability for the most serious crimes under international law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011.
  • Under the guidance of a P3 Information Analyst, gathers, collects, evaluates and analyzes information to determine relevance and gaps and to inform decisions relating to investigative activities.
  • Organizes and synthesizes relevant information and evidence, including through the use of analytical software(s), for the preparation of analytical reports and related analytical products in support of the IIIM’s structural investigations, responses to requests for assistance and/or case building activities.
  • Maintains and updates IIIM’s internal databases and uses information management evidence processes and electronic information systems to classify, manage, store and transfer information.
  • Participates in briefings and conferences with other members of the IIIM, as well as with actors external to the IIIM including national judicial authorities, civil society actors, UN entities and other partners relevant to collection and analysis of information and evidence.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in criminology, law, Middle Eastern studies, conflict or security studies, international relations, human rights or criminal law, political/social science or related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Job - Specific Qualification

Certification or training in intelligence analysis is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible work experience in information analysis in the context of criminal investigations, international humanitarian law or human rights, or in the context of the Middle East or North Africa region is required. Work experience using analytical software is desirable. Prior analytical work experience in relation to the Syrian conflict is desirable. Prior analytical work experience with an accountability institution at the national or international level is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English and Arabic are required. French is desirable. The appointment against this position is limited to the Syria International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism. External candidate selected through this job opening will be granted a fixed-term appointment limited to the entity (“FTA-limited”) in accordance with section 2.2 (c) of administrative instruction ST/AI/2025/3 on Administration of appointments. Renewal of appointment is contingent upon continued existence of mandate and availability of funding. If this position is discontinued, the incumbent will be separated from service.
