Qualifications

• Degree in electrical, mechatronics, or similar engineering field with experience in compliance and certification of Power Electronics.
• Solid background in standards analysis, test plan definition, tests execution, and certification documentation management.
• Experience with electrical safety and functional safety is advantageous.
• Interest in applied research and product development within a global, cross‑functional team.
• Fluent in English; German language skills are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead SST compliance and certification activities for Data Center SST product development from design through validation to final certification with UL, IEC, REACH, RoHS, and related standards.
• Plan and manage certification activities; interact with certification bodies, labs, and internal teams across locations.
• Maintain SST documentation and ensure lifecycle compliance across product development and production.
• Contribute to the Power Electronics expertise base within the SST for Datacenters R&D team, emphasizing reliability and quality.

This position reports to:

SST Product Architect

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced R&D Senior Engineer with special focus on Product Compliance and Certification to be part of the expansion of our business with a novel Solid State Transformer technology for datacenter applications. In this role, you will have the opportunity to be part of the ELDS R&D Power Electronics center of excellence team for Solid State Transformer in charge of the design and development of the future Solid State Transformer products family with first focus on Data Center application requirements. In this context, and as part of the R&D SST development team, the SST Compliance and Certification Senior R&D Engineer will contribute to the design and development of the SST with special focus on UL and IEC compliance requirements and activities from the specification phase to the final certification tests and documentation. The location for this position is Baden-Daettwil in Switzerland, with future relocation possibilities to other production locations.

You will be part of advanced R&D and productization activities in the field of power electronics for the ABB SST for Datacenter Products, in close cooperation with a highly qualified senior team of R&D engineers and stakeholders in a global and multicultural setup.

You will be mainly accountable for:

• Member of the SST for Data Center R&D team, leading the compliance and certification activities for the SST product development, from the design, through the validation and until final certification phases of the product development with the relevant application standards and directives, e.g. UL, IEC, REACH, RoHS etc. This is to be performed in close collaboration with the R&D team and other product development functions, completing risks assessments, type test definitions, communication with standardization bodies, interaction with suppliers and factory audits, supporting the design and testing activities for compliance, etc.
• Lead the SST compliance and certification plans based on your expertise in certification, regulations and standards applicable for MV Power Electronic Converters. This includes direct interaction with different certification bodies, internal and external laboratories, and also close interaction with other local and global compliance activities and project teams linked to the SST product development.
• Responsible for SST product compliance and certification documentation management and maintenance in close collaboration with the productization and operations teams throughout the product lifecycle.
• Actively contribute to the maintenance and further development of the key Power Electronics Technologies Expertise and Know-How of the SST for Datacenters R&D team with focus on robust design for reliability and quality assurance.

Qualifications for the role:

• Degree in the field of engineering (electrical, mechatronics, etc.), with experience in the field of compliance and certification of Power Electronics products. Experience with MV Power Electronics products is advantageous.
• Solid background know-how and expertise in compliance and certification activities such as standards analysis and interpretation, definition of tests’ plans and specification, tests execution, interaction with certification bodies, certification documentation management, etc.
• High interest and focus on practical verification and validation in MV lab environment in view of compliance and certification of new products and functionality’s introduction to the market. Expertise in compliance areas such as electrical safety, functional safety, etc. is and advantage.
• Interest in applied research and product development, self-organized, motivated person, that likes to work in a highly qualified research and development team composed of experts in different domains and global locations.
• Fluency in written and spoken English. German is a plus.
• Availability to travel sporadically.
