Job summary

The Yorkton Tribal Council and The Good Spirit School Division are seeking a Cultural Coordinator to advance coordinated programming across four partner schools. The role strengthens Indigenous cultures, languages, land-based learning, and community knowledge within curriculum.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of Grade 12.
• Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous students and their parents.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and facilitate cultural programming across the four partner schools.
• Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community representatives, staff and administrators to ensure programming reflects local protocols and community knowledge.
• Support teachers in developing lessons that integrate Indigenous perspectives and traditional languages.
• Coordinate land-based learning activities and shared equipment among the four schools.
• Provide or coordinate professional learning to embed Indigenous ways of knowing in teaching and programming.
• Develop and organize culturally appropriate resources and program information.
• Build relationships with First Nations communities and educational partners to broaden opportunities for students and staff.
• Contribute to sustained integration of Indigenous education across partner schools.

Reporting jointly to the Yorkton Tribal Council Director of Education and the Good Spirit School Division Superintendent of Indigenous Education, the Cultural Coordinator develops and supports coordinated programming across the four partner schools. The role strengthens the integration of local First Nations cultures, Indigenous ways of knowing, traditional languages, land-based learning, and community knowledge within school programming and curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and facilitate cultural programming, initiatives, and events across the four partner schools.
• Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community representatives, school administrators, teachers, consultants, and other partners to ensure programming reflects local protocols, priorities, and community knowledge.
• Support teachers in developing and using grade-appropriate lessons, units, resources, and learning experiences that respectfully integrate Indigenous perspectives, First Nations content, and traditional languages.
• Coordinate land-based learning activities and the equitable sharing, care, and use of related equipment and materials among the four schools.
• Provide or coordinate professional learning that strengthens staff confidence and capacity to embed Indigenous ways of knowing, cultural understanding, and promising practices in teaching and school programming.
• Research, compile, develop, and organize culturally appropriate resources, materials, and program information.
• Build relationships and networks with First Nations communities, service organizations, and educational partners to broaden opportunities for students and staff.
• Contribute to practices, procedures, and systems that support sustained integration of Indigenous education across the partner schools.
• Complete other related duties assigned jointly by the Yorkton Tribal Council Director of Education and the Good Spirit School Division Superintendent of Indigenous Education.

• Demonstrated ability to independently initiate and organize projects to achieve work process efficiencies. The Cultural Coordinator must demonstrate the ability to pay attention to detail and ensure work is consistently completed accurately within expected timeframes.

Adaptability & Flexibility

• A Cultural Coordinator must demonstrate their ability to prioritize multiple demands and effectively manage time while being responsive to changing priorities. Flexibility entails understanding and appreciating different and opposing perspectives on an issue and adapting one’s approach as a situation's requirements change.
• Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to apply judgement in complex, highly sensitive and sometimes ambiguous situations are essential.

Communication

• A Cultural Coordinator must have superior interpersonal and communication skills and be able to communicate professionally with administration and staff. Excellent interpersonal skills along with proven written and oral communication, and computer presentation skills are required.

• Be knowledgeable and supportive of applicable Tribal Council, GSSD Board and Division policies and procedures.
• Be willing to engage in lifelong learning with respect to training, in-services and courses of study, and understanding of Indigenous culture and traditional ways of knowing.

• A Cultural Coordinator must be able to work with staff and provide appropriate information and support in a timely manner. The Cultural Coordinator must be able to work as a team player and independently with minimal supervision.

• A Cultural Coordinator must present a positive and professional attitude towards others, their work, and the division and conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to an educational institute that provides services to children. The position promotes the GSSD values of belonging, respect, responsibility, learning, nurturing and perseverance.

Documentation and Accountability

• Maintain records of student participation in cultural teachings, programs, and events.
• Document requests and supports provided to teachers, school staff, and partner schools.
• Communicate regularly with the designated supervisors and school administrators regarding plans, progress, emerging needs, and use of shared resources.
• Follow each school’s visitor, sign-in, safety, and operational procedures.
