Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Coordinator or designate, and clinically to a DASW Supervisor as required, the Youth Therapist works within a framework of cultural safety and humility. The role involves supporting care coordination across various services, with an emphasis on reducing barriers and facilitating timely treatment and re-engagement of clients.

The therapist provides client and family-centered care through trauma-informed and evidence-based practices to youth and families affected by mental illness and substance use disorders. Responsibilities include screening, assessment, treatment planning, case management, therapy, liaising with community resources, education, and participation in meetings and training.

Responsibilities

  • Initial screening of referrals to determine appropriate treatment based on client needs and urgency.
  • Assess client needs through interviews and background information gathering.
  • Provide first-level interventions and support, including brief interventions and monitoring outcomes.
  • Offer treatment, case management, and support for complex cases, including crisis situations.
  • Facilitate client utilization of community services and develop supportive programs.
  • Refer clients to community treatment options and utilize community resources.
  • Educate clients and families about mental health and substance use issues and recovery strategies.
  • Maintain accurate client records and documentation.
  • Develop links with community resources and advocate for clients.
  • Maintain data and participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Provide consultative services and participate in team planning and professional development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience: Master's Degree in Counselling Psychology, Social Work, or related field; one year recent experience with youth in mental health/substance use settings or equivalent.

Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of harm reduction, trauma-informed care, community resources, assessment tools, therapy skills, and effective communication. Proficiency in computer applications and physical ability to perform duties.
