Job summary

Action for Healthy Communities is seeking a Youth Liaison, Sport & Leadership to advance youth development through sport and leadership activities in the greater Edmonton area.

The role focuses on planning, delivering and improving youth programs, with coaching support, curriculum development, and family outreach. Working mostly in person, you will collaborate with schools, coaches and community partners to ensure safe, inclusive and engaging experiences.

Qualifications

• Experience participating in and coaching sports.
• Post-secondary education in recreation, kinesiology, education, child and youth care, community development, social work, or related field; equivalent education and experience considered.

Job description

Position: Youth Liaison, Sport & Leadership

Number of Hours: 30 hrs/week

Salary range: $26/hr - $27/hr

Contract term: Immediate start through March 31, 2027, with the possibility of extension based on performance.

The incumbent supports the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of children and youth programs, with a primary focus on sport, leadership development, and inclusive participation. The role is responsible for supporting program delivery, youth leadership initiatives, community events and resource connection while ensuring programs are safe, engaging, culturally responsive, and aligned with AHC’s objectives. A key focus of the position is supporting coaches and youth leaders through observation, mentoring, feedback, and practical guidance to strengthen program quality and participant experience. The incumbent also supports curriculum and resource development, registration and program promotion, parent communication, information sessions, and assistance for children, youth, and families in accessing available resources and community connection.

The position works closely with the Program Coordinator, coaches, families, schools, and community partners and contributes to program monitoring, reporting, and evaluation to support responsive and effective program delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Program planning and implementation

Leadership Program

• Implement youth leadership programs and support participants in developing leadership, communication, teamwork, and practical life skills through sports activities.
• Support develops, review, and update Sport Leadership curriculum, resources, and supporting materials.

Sport program Coordination

• Coordinate tournaments, sport events, and other special sport activities at partner schools.
• Support event planning, scheduling, participant coordination, logistics, and communication.
• Work with coaches, staff, volunteers, participants, families, and partners to ensure activities are organized effectively and delivered safely.
• Provide coaching coverage when needed to maintain continuity of program delivery.

Information and Referral Support

• Plan and facilitate sport information sessions for children, youth, and families providing information about community sport opportunities, registration processes, participation requirements, and available resources.
• Support children, youth, and families with sport applications and connections to appropriate sport programs and resources.
• Help identify and address barriers that may prevent underserved children and youth from accessing sport and recreation opportunities.

Mentoring and Supervision

• Observe facilitators, volunteers, coaches and assistant coaches during program delivery to support program quality, participant engagement, and consistent coaching practices.
• Provide ongoing mentoring, constructive feedback, and practical guidance to coaches to strengthen their skills and confidence.
• Identify coaching development needs and communicate observations and recommendations to the Program Coordinator.
• Support coaches in applying inclusive, age-appropriate, culturally responsive, and positive approaches when working with children and youth.
• Support the orientation and development of new coaches, youth leaders, volunteers, and other program delivery staff as required.

Program Promotion and Outreach

• Support participant registration and maintain accurate records.
• Promote programs, leadership opportunities, tournaments, and events through outreach and advertising.
• Recruit eligible participants through schools, families, community organizations, and other networks.
• Respond to inquiries and provide accurate program information.
• Represent AHC at community events, school meetings, and stakeholder gatherings to promote programs and strengthen partnerships.

Communication and Stakeholder Relationships

• Maintain positive and professional relationships with parents, school staff, community partners, and service providers.
• Serve as a liaison between the program, families, and host sites, ensuring clear and timely communication regarding schedules, activities, and participant needs.
• Share site-specific insights, challenges, and feedback with the Program Coordinator to support continuous improvement and planning.
• Coordinate newsletters or parent communications in collaboration with the coordinator.

Administrative

• Track attendance, participation, and program outcomes; ensure timely and accurate data entry and recordkeeping.
• Submit monthly reports, including highlights, challenges, and success stories.
• Collect feedback from participants, families, coaches, and other stakeholders to support program evaluation and continuous improvement.
• Ensure secure handling of participant information and adherence to confidentiality standards.

Working Conditions

• 30 hours per week; occasional evening and weekend work may be required based on program and event schedules.
• Primarily in-person work, including office and program/community locations
• A current Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search, and Intervention Record Check, completed within the previous six (6) months, is required.
• A valid Class 5 Driver’s License, clean driver’s abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle are required, as regular travel to program and community locations throughout the greater Edmonton area is expected.
