Job summary

School District 60 seeks a Youth Care Worker at Bert Bowes Middle School to support students facing social/emotional or mental health challenges. The role reports to site Administrative Officers and collaborates with teachers, counsellors, and district staff. 3 hours per day, five days a week, with a start date as soon as possible and a probation period.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalency
  • Two years university/college coursework in youth care and counselling
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention training (15 hour) before probation ends
  • Two years recent experience in conflict resolution, anger management, and life skills
  • Coaching youth with diagnosed behaviour or mental health disorders
  • Valid B.C. driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle; clean driver’s abstract
  • Food Safe; WHMIS certificate and other safety training to be completed within probation
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search prior to starting employment
  • Proof of graduation/highest education level required prior to starting

Responsibilities

  • Participate in student placement, progress, and school-based team meetings
  • Assist the teacher/counsellor in developing and evaluating life skills, social skills, self-esteem and behaviour management programs
  • Provide crisis intervention and management individually and as part of a crisis team
  • Facilitate group counselling sessions under the school counsellor's direction
  • Monitor students as required
  • Assist students and families in connecting with outside agency services
  • Transport identified students to services and visit homes as needed
  • Consult with other professionals to promote inter-agency cooperation
  • Participate in daily physical education, fitness and recreation programs
  • Maintain accurate records and evidence of interventions
  • Gather documents for funding purposes
  • Assume other site/program responsibilities as directed
  • Perform other job-related duties as directed

YOUTH CARE WORKER

Position Description There is a position available for a Youth Care Worker at Bert Bowes Middle School. All Applications must be completed online and will be accepted until 12:00 pm noon on October 1, 2026. Reporting to the site Administrative Officer(s), this position is responsible for working in collaboration with the classroom teacher or school counsellor and various district resource personnel in providing services to students having difficulties coping as a result of social/emotional or mental health problems. These students may be placed in alternative education programs or be receiving support in regular classroom programs. Hours of work: (3) hrs. per day, five (5) days per week Duties to Commence: As soon as possible after closing until June 24, 2027 Work Year Base: Ten (10) months per year Commencing Salary: $31.94/hr.

Duties

  • Performs other job related duties as directed.
Qualifications And Attributes
  • Grade 12 or equivalency
  • Minimum of two years of university or college course work in areas relating to youth care and counselling;
  • Training in Crisis Prevention Intervention; (15 hour certification program) required before completion of probationary period.
  • Two years recent experience (within 5 years) in Conflict Resolution, Anger Management, and Life Skills
  • Coaching, working with youth, with diagnosed behaviour or mental health disorders (i.e. FAS, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Childhood Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Eating Disorder);
  • Valid B.C. drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle;
  • Clean Drivers Abstract
  • Food Safe
  • Ability to work independently and set priorities
  • Ability to manage difficult conversations
  • WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team
  • Must be able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search conducted by the District prior to staring employment
