Job summary

Bert Bowes Middle School is hiring an Indigenous Youth Care Worker to support Indigenous students’ social-emotional well-being and academic success. The role requires collaboration with staff and Indigenous Education Centre, and involves culturally relevant activities and crisis interventions.

Hours are 7 hours/day, five days a week, with a start as soon as possible. Salary starts at $31.94/hr and scales with responsibilities across the school site.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent is required.
• Two years university/college coursework related to youth care and counseling.
• Crisis Prevention Intervention training (15 hours) required.
• Two years experience in conflict resolution and life skills.
• Valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
• Proven knowledge of Indigenous culture; Indigenous ancestry preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collect Indigenous student self-identification forms and parental consent to ensure audit compliance.
• Report to site Administrative Officer(s) and District Indigenous Principal.
• Create schedules with District Indigenous Principal and Indigenous Support Teacher.
• Maintain accurate student records as directed.
• Provide socio-emotional support individually or in small groups.
• Liaise with Indigenous communities and transport students to counselling services as needed.

INDIGENOUS YOUTH CARE WORKER

Position Description:

There is a position available for an Indigenous Youth Care Worker at Bert Bowes Middle School.

The role of the Indigenous Youth Care Worker (IYCW) is to provide identifiedIndigenous students with opportunities to enhance theirsocial-emotional well-being while ensuring theiracademic success and promoting cultural opportunities. The IYCW must have the ability to work independently, and collaboratively, with teachers and the Indigenous EducationCentre staff. The IYCW'sresponsibilities varyaccording to the students' and school needs but all have the ultimate objective of assisting students in order to foster educational success.

Hours of work:

(7) hrs/day, five (5) days per week

Duties to Commence:

As soon as possible after closing

Work Year Base:

Ten (10) months per year

Commencing Salary:

$31.94/hr.

Duties:

1. Collect andmaintain Indigenous student self-identification and parent consent forms (1701s) to ensure audit compliance.
2. Reports directly to the siteAdministrative Officer(s) and District IndigenousPrincipal.
3. In cooperation with the site Administrative Officer(s), the District Indigenous Principal, and the Indigenous Support Teacher, creates anappropriate schedule for working with their Indigenous students.
4. Maintain accurate and comprehensive student records asdirected by the site Administrative Officer(s) and the District Indigenous Principal.
5. Attend IYCWmeetingasrequested by the District Indigenous Principal.
6. Provide motivation and encouragement for Indigenous students to work to their full potential so that they, and others, can recognize their special gifts and talents.
7. Provide academic support to Indigenous students' individually, within small group settings, classrooms, or designated areas.
8. Monitors and provides support to Indigenous students and their families, as well as being the liaison between the school and the Indigenous communities within theirassigned school catchment.
9. Provide general one-to-one, or group based, socio-emotional support to Indigenous students.
10. Provide directed one-to-one, social-emotional support as needed.
11. Provide crisis intervention and management both individually and as part of a crisis management team.
12. Assist the school based team with connection to outside agencies.
13. Transport Indigenous students to designatedcounselling services, on a limited basis.
14. Provide Indigenous perspective to all students and staff at their assigned school(s) such as:
    • Connecting students and staff to resources
    • Enhancing school and staffunderstanding of Indigenous world views andperspectives
    • Ability to promote Indigenous healing practices such as; circle talks, seven teachings, healing circles and other relevant Indigenoustraditions
15. IYCW may be called upon to act as a guest speaker to supplement lessons
16. Organize and facilitate culturallyrelevant experiences for students both in the school and in the community
17. Demonstrated knowledge of the Ministry ofEducationgraduation program.
18. Assumes otherresponsibilities that are site and program specific.
19. Attend directed professional development in-services.
20. When requestedby the site Administrative Officer(s) or DistrictPrincipal of Indigenous Education,conduct home visits.
21. By their presence the IYCW must be a positive Indigenous role model for students, staff and community.
22. Performs other job related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Attributes:

• Grade 12 or equivalency
• Minimum of two years university or college course work in areas relating toyouth care andcounseling
• Training in CrisisPrevention Intervention (15 hour certificate program)
• Two years experience in Conflict Resolution, Anger Management, and Life Skills
• Coaching, working with youth, with diagnosed behaviour or mental health disorders (i.e. FAS, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, ObsessiveCompulsiveDisorder, ChildhoodSchizophrenia,BipolarDisorder, and Eating Disorder)
• Valid Class 5 B.C. drivers licence and access to areliablevehicle
• Clean Drivers Abstract
• Level 1 First Aid
• Food Safe
• Proven knowledge and experience with Indigenous culture is a requirement
• Ability to workindependently and setpriorities
• Ability to manage difficultconversations in aprofessional manner
• WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training providedby the District to be completed within the probationary period
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be anintegral part of a team
• Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry (pending Human Rights Variance). Proof of ancestry is required
• Must be able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search conducted by the District prior to starting employment
