Job summary

YMCA of Greater Toronto is seeking a part-time Basketball Instructor for Brampton, Ontario. The role involves teaching children and youth using YMCA curriculum, creating weekly lesson plans, and maintaining safe environments at the Brampton YMCA Health & Fitness Centre.

Ideal candidates hold a related diploma, relevant certifications, and at least 1 year of basketball instruction experience. The position runs for approximately 6 months on a part-time hourly basis with varying hours.

Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in field related to working with children or youth or equivalent experience.
• Current Lifesaving Society awards: Standard First Aid & CPR level C is an asset
• Current NCCP Basketball Coaching certification (Learn to Train level)
• Minimum 1-year previous experience instructing Children and Teens in Basketball
• Good knowledge of child and youth development from experience
• Ability to encourage and motivate members and volunteers
• Evidence continuing professional development in working with children and youth
• Strong interpersonal and communication with members, staff and volunteers
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Flexible with schedules including weekday afternoons, evenings and weekends
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
• Focus on health, safety and wellbeing of all children and youth in YMCA programs

Responsibilities

• Deliver course content and examine participants following YMCA criteria.
• Develop and implement sequential weekly lesson plans.
• Recognize participant learning styles and adapt delivery.
• Coach and develop participants to meet success.
• Communicate child progress to parents and Supervisor.
• Maintain accurate weekly progress sheets and records.
• Take attendance and sign in/out of the program.
• Set up and take down equipment; ensure safety and report issues.
• Participate in scheduled programs, meetings and events.
• Encourage members to access other YMCA programs with staff/volunteers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

Diploma or degree in field related to working with children or youth

Lifesaving Society: Standard First Aid & CPR level C

NCCP Basketball Coaching certification (Learn to Train level)

1+ year experience instructing children and teens in basketball

Understanding of child and youth development

Ability to motivate members and volunteers

Continuing professional development in working with children and youth

Interpersonal and relationship-building skills
