ABOUT YELLOW BRICK HOUSE:
Yellow Brick House is a leading provider of life-saving services to women, families and children who have experienced violence and abuse. We offer emergency shelter, individual, group and child counselling, legal support services, and transitional housing support.
PROFILE:
Reporting to the Supervisor of Direct Services, the Youth Mental Health Counsellor will provide specialized, trauma-informed clinical services to children and youth who have been exposed to domestic violence and abuse. The Counsellor will deliver one-on-one and group therapy using evidence-based practices, including but not limited to Play Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Services will focus on trauma recovery, resilience building, emotional regulation, and early intervention to prevent long-term psychological impacts. This role also supports staff training in trauma-informed, mental health, and harm reduction principles
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The major responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Clinical Counselling & Early Intervention:
- Conduct comprehensive intake assessments, trauma screenings, and individualized therapeutic plans for children and youth (ages 4-21). Conducts discharge interviews with clients and administers satisfaction surveys as required.
- Deliver structured, trauma-focused therapeutic interventions (8–10 sessions per child/youth over 4–6 months).
- Facilitate small group therapy programs focused on trauma recovery and emotional regulation.
- Utilize Play Therapy, CBT, and other age-appropriate clinical modalities.
- Address mental health symptoms such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, behavioral challenges linked to trauma exposure.
- Deliver remotely and/or in-person, goal-focused counselling based upon comprehensive, strength-based assessments.
- Guides students and volunteers as required.
Case Management & Advocacy:
- Provide coordinated care planning with internal shelter teams (CRAW, Transitional Housing, MIM).
- Refer clients to additional community-based mental health or specialized community services as required.
- Support the development of safety and resilience plans for each child/youth.
Program Development & Staff Training:
- Assist in the design and evaluation of the Youth Mental Health Program.
- Provide trauma-informed training and consultation to Yellow Brick House staff regarding child/youth mental health, addictions, and harm reduction.
Data Collection & Reporting:
- Administer pre- and post-intervention surveys to measure client outcomes.
- Maintain up-to-date, confidential client files, relevant and non-judgmental case notes, and program documentation on each client as per Yellow Brick House procedures.
- Compile caseload statistics and identify opportunities to improve client outcomes and program effectiveness.
- Support quarterly and annual reporting to funders (e.g., MCCSS) and internal evaluation processes.
Engagement:
- Communicate fully and openly with supervision; keeping supervisor fully informed of relevant client and staff member information, at all times.
- Participate actively in regular team meetings and external community collaborations.
- Maintain a positive approach and a professional manner at all times
- Foster strong relationships with educational, mental health, and child welfare agencies.
- Keeps up-to date on issues relating to gender-based violence and evidence-based practices for intervention as it pertains to woman and children.
- Maintain community awareness of Yellow Brick House programs throughout York Region and represent the organization at relevant community initiatives.

HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Follow the duties and responsibilities specified under the Occupational Health & Safety Act Sections 28 .
- Ensure all safety and non-safety rules and regulations are followed.
- Ensure adherence to established safety, quality and housekeeping standards.
- Attends Environmental Health and Safety training.
- Adhere to Yellow Brick House health and safety, environmental, and quality standards, policies and procedures.
- Report any known hazard, defect, incident or compliance issue to the employer or supervisor.
- Understand BILL 132 and 168 and uphold the policies that prohibit domestic violence, workplace violence, sexual harassment and harassment in the Workplace.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
Education:
- Completion of a clinically supervised undergraduate or graduate degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field
Experience:
- 2-3 years working with diverse clientele.
- 2-3 years of clinical counselling experience preferably working with children and youth exposed to domestic violence, trauma, and abuse.
- 2-3 years related experience coordinating and co-facilitating support groups and developing group materials for women.
Clinical Skills:
- Certification or formal training in Play Therapy, CBT, and trauma-focused modalities highly preferred.
- Capable of using therapeutic modalities tow work with trauma informed practices, child/youth development, mental health, addictions, and harm reduction frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations including immigrant, refugee, racialized, and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.
- Proficient with client management systems, Microsoft Office, and outcome measurement tools.
- Familiarity with relevant legislation (Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Mental Health Act).
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings if required.
- Valid driver’s license, access to reliable transportation, and a Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Working knowledge of application of Anti-Oppressive and Feminist frameworks
- Current First Aid/CPR and Non Violent Crisis Intervention training preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works in a comfortable environment either inside or outside in typically pleasant conditions. Typical conditions are such that some risk of any injury or harmful effect is possible.
- Some travel required to respective shelters as required.
- Must be able to sit/stand for extended period of time.
