Description:

Diagnostic assessment of written assignments for foundational first-year writing course.

Positions: Up to4position(s) available.

Estimated Course Enrolment: Up to 1450 students across all sections.

Schedule: Training and benchmarking as well as assessments will take place in early-September (in-person).

Sessional Dates of Appointment: September 2-15, 2025

Hours:Up to 5 hours of training and benchmarking and up to 50 hours of assessment work (workload dependent). Additional hours may be negotiated during the remainder of the academic year on a discretionary basis.

Salary: excluding vacation pay

  • Writing Instructor I: $55.46/hr

  • Writing Instructor I –Long Term: $59.62/hr

  • Writing Instructor II: $59.62/hr

  • Writing Instructor II – Long Term: $61.04/hr

  • Writing Instructor II (priority): $61.38/hr

  • Writing Instructor II (priority) – Long Term: $62.83/hr

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Applied Linguistics, Communication, English, Education, Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition) with strong writing and oral communication skills.
  • TESL certification or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
  • Flexible availability is a requirement for these positions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline (as above).
  • Familiarity with advanced second-language education practices and/or experience as an assessor of second and/or additional language student writing.
  • Demonstrated experience working with first-year University students and/or multilingual writers.

Description of Duties:

  • Meeting with Principal Investigator and team of assessors for benchmarking session.

  • Performing diagnostic assessments of individual written assignments.

  • Recording and reporting results in a timely manner.
